Day 5 - Petra |

(Right) Ellen and I stand on a road built by the Romans. The Romans eventually occupied Petra and built structures of their own. Behind us (and below) are other buildings of the Nabatheans carved into the cliffs. Our guide pointed out that the Nabathean roads were easy to tell from those built by the Romans. The Roman road on which we are standing is somewhat curved to allow water to drain to the edges. The Nabathean are flat. This road served as a parade ground. Along the side of the road are built stone seats. Each belonged to a Roman or Nabathean citizen of note to use to watch passing spectacles. |

Most of the buildings in Petra are built into the walls of the cliffs. However, (left) a notable exception was a building near an open area where we had lunch. |
