(Right) I explored one of the tombs on the way back to the entrance of Petra. Only a small dark chamber remains. At the top left of the tomb are stairs. They are symbolic of the stairway to heaven. (Below) During the Roman occupation of Petra, they built an amphitheater. Using the custom of the city, it was carved from the rock face. Heather and Lisa took time to explore the connecting rooms remaining beneath the structure. |

Day 1 Jerusalem |
On leaving the city through the crevice by which we entered, our guide pointed out sculptures carved in the rock walls. The one at the left was of a camel and caravan travelers. It symbolizes the silk route trade at which Petra was the crossroads and which contributed to the wealth of the city. It is believed that over three thousand people once lived here among the stone.
