Some 50 miles from San Cristobal, near the town of Ocosingo, are the ruins of Tonina, a classical Mayan site which is currently being excavated and restored.
The small town of Ocosingo was the scene of fighting during the recent Zapatista uprising.
A dirt road takes you nine miles from Ocosingo to Tonina.
