Halden, Norway, August, 2000

My friend, Facundo, was living in Halden, and I spent the last few days of my Norway trip with him and his mother (who was visiting from Argentina). Halden is located in southern Norway near the border with Sweden. I enjoyed my time in Halden the most, and Facundo even taught me how to order a beer in Norwegian (althought I was too shy to use it).

Overlooking Halden from the Fredriksten Festning (Fredriksten Fortress). Because of Halden's proximity to Sweden, it has been an important defensive location. On two occasions (1659 and 1716), the Halden residents burned the town down rather than be taken by the Swedes.

A canal runs from Haldn to Göteborg, Sweden via a series of lakes. We took a cruise along the canal from near Halden to Strømsfoss (?). Along the way we passed through the Brekke Locks, which raised us 26.6 m to the next lake.

Facundo and I at ??, Sweden. We ate lunch here - a very cute little town. On the way we passed the outlet stores, where many Norwegians go on the weekends to take advantage of the lower Swedish prices. The place was packed - we stopped there briefly and got stuck in the traffic!
