Note: A typical package of 4 adults traveling, including estimated auto rental, would equal $296US, or $74US each. Given longtime standard bus tours, which are no bargain for their single stop at Chichén-Itzá for 3 hours (half of which is herding around a buffet table, set amidst a souvenir shop, and guaranteed to run), a single rest stop (again set amidst a souvenir stand) plus the time spent picking up and dropping off other passengers at numerous hotels, this Definitive Package is, especially, somewhat more than just a bargain and is, hopefully, what you are coming for.The itinerary, as it emerges from Quintana Roo, follows an historical context from rugged independence toward colonialism, and the contemporary Mayan milieu. Chichén-Itzá is also presented with an unusual parallel: the strangest cast of characters (archaeologists) yet whose idiosyncrasies and series of struggles, which helped bring Chichén-Itzá to light, is more than just a story in itself: it would, as a matter of fact, put 'Raiders of the Lost Arch' (?) to shame!
Shopper's Note: Valladolid offers especially low prices for their handicrafts: excellent leather goods, dresses, hammocks and herbs. Mass produced items, such as T-shirts, ceramics and plaques, are also lower than along the coast and much easier to bargain for. Roadside salespersons at Chichén-Itzá offer especially low prices for hand carved and painted, wood totems. All-in-all: prices which often represent savings approaching the cost of the excursion itself!
