Fortaleza -- Jericoacoara

A regular bus connects daily Fortaleza and Jericoacoara two times a day; that service includes the off-road part inside the protected area of Jericoacoara.

It's nicer to take the bus leaving at night (see the "journey racoon"); also at night it goes faster: about 4.30 hours by bus more 40 minutes off-road by a four wheel drive.

Usually there is no problem of seats availability; anyway is much better to reserve seats in advance.

For information and seat reservation you can also go direct with the company in Fortaleza. The bus picks up passengers also in the main seaside street (Av. Beira Mar) where most main hotels are.

Ticket to go and come back now (Dec. 97) costs about 28 Dollars per person.

If you want to go by dune-buggy or car, driving yourself, you can rent one (in Fortaleza.

An exceptional possibility is to go "off-road" along the beach, almost all journey by the seaside. This is a wonderful experience for people loving adventure. It needs two days sleeping a night in some village along the beach. It's more than 200 Km by the sea (Informations in Fortaleza and Jericoacoara).

Depending on seasons it's also possible to go till the beginning of the off-road part by little planes (Information locally in Fortaleza).

WHERE TO STAY IN FORTALEZA

In Fortaleza, sure the best way to stay is living in a flat (furnished apartment). The price/quality ratio is much better than staying in hotel, and you only renounce a few services but have bigger privacy and everything an apartment offers more than a hotel (dining room, real kitchen, etc.).

Fortaleza has every kind of flats for different prices to offer. The best examples are in buildings like "residence" and the rent includes cleaning and linen change. It's important to choose one well placed in the town (near the seaside and down-town, in no risk residential district, etc.) and with a good sea-sight! In Fortaleza, the best located place for staying is the "Praia de Iracema" district; best for everything the town may offer during the day and the night without any useless risks. It's a residential district "near to everything": for example it's here tourists and residing people meet each other than distributing themselves among many bares with live music and discos.

WHERE TO STAY IN JERICOACOARA

Although to sleep a few days without any comfort could be a nice experience too, it's much more advisable to stay in places with granted hygienic conditions. For instance, don't forget that in this area water is a valuable material, so it's better to check if really available where you're going to stay. Anyway keep in your mind not to waste it; don't forget that in the protected area of Jericoacoara the conventional electricity is forbidden and to have much water needs electrical pumps.

Another important thing: choose a building offering private but open-air areas, better if rich of shadow and with good ventilation. Pay attention to check if someone is selling to you a beautiful "all inclusive packet" to see Jericoacoara that then reveals to be false. Try to see and choose yourself or make a minimum check looking at least photos before any decision. Remember: if it is expensive it is... expensive, if very cheap... sure exists the reason why!

There are several possibilities to find a good place to stay. A nice idea is staying in a good "pousada" ("lodge" type) where you'll find also a way to organize your trips in the Jericoacoara surroundings (on foot, with horse, by boat, by buggy, etc.).
