Balik Kampung

August 15, 1994

[ All things must come to an end. After spending one and a half years in S'pore, it's time to go home. I was hoping to catch the election in S'pore before I leave for New Jersey, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. After 43 articles and lots of satay, it's hard to wrap everything up in one final article. So I will keep this last one short and sweet. This email account will be here for a while, so don't hesitate to send email to keep in touch. Good luck to everyone in s.c.s., especially to Mr. Salty River.

p.s. any good suggestion for souvenirs? (I already got lots of fine T-shirts and Mr. Kiasu stuffs.) ]

Woke up this morning and tried to open my door to let the air-con system cool off the entire S'pore. I should really be glad that utility is included as part of the rent 8-) Also very glad to miss the heat wave a few months back. Instead, I was freezing my buns off in the friendly city of Boston, savoring that last drop of the New England clam chowder at Legal Seafood Restaurant. It's a sad state of affair when you have to read Dave Letterman's Top Ten to keep up with the current events happening in the States. Things really hit me when I picked up an issue of People and recognized only 2 out of the 50 most beautiful people in the world. It sent chills up my spine.

Someone once told me that if you have nothing positive to say, don't say anything. Someone also told me that foreigners should not get involved with the politics of S'pore, so I listened and went to read my Hammer. Someone told me that I really haven't settled down in S'pore. I guess my concept of settling down is owning a car and a house. I was at the KL Suban airport and saw Francis Seow's "To Catch a Tartar" selling at Rm 53 a copy. Very tempted to pick it up but decided against it. Worry about items in my possession (e.g. drugs, chewing gums, video tapes, magazines, books, etc.) when I enter S'pore custom. Someone told me that I am very disillusioned... Sigh...

Someone recently told me that this MTS series has turned from being optimistic to pessimistic. After 18 months in S'pore, I guess I have run out of things to write. Or maybe I am just preoccupied with work and other personal business. Or maybe SDU does stand for Single, Desperate and Ugly 8-) In any event, it's time to wrap up the series. Let me end this with something I posted on the net a while back:

*** You know you've been in S'pore too long when you ... ***

Ok, time to go withdraw my CPF and say good-bye to all my S'porean friends. I am going to miss this place... especially the food 8-(
