I am 59 years old and worked for the Toronto Fire Services in the Quartermaster section. I retired four years ago. I had been in emergency services communications for 26 years and really enjoyed the work, most of the time. I have been a Ham Radio operator since 1962 and a sailor (sort of ) since 1998. Although I no longer have the boat, I still have an interest in sailing.

My hobbies and interests include amateur radio , motorcycling and travelling. Sometimes I even have time to play with this computer. It may take a while to get everything I want on this site but I will persevere.

Ham Radio and Me

Sailing

I was introduced to the wonderful world of Ham Radio by my uncle Frank, VE3AZC, when I was 11 years old. I was amazed that you could talk to someone halfway around the world from you on a radio set. From then on it was eat and sleep Ham Radio. I studied hard for the test and got my first licence at age 15, We had an age limit in Canada back then and you had to be 15 before you could write the test. I was given the call sign VE3FGU and still use that call today. I operate mostly 6 metres and HF AM with 1960's vintage equipment but still enjoy a good CW contact now and then. Some pics of the radio station are on the next page.

7 years ago, a friend asked me if I would like to go sailing on his 34 foot sailboat. Silly me I said sure. I was hooked. The next time my wife came along and I though she would not care too much for sailing, what with the boat heeling over all the time and she doesn't swim very well. It was quite windy that day too. Well she enjoyed it so much, we went sailing with our friend whenever we were invited. Last year our friend moved his boat to another marina in preparation for a retirement cruise to the Caribbean and we had to get our own boat. After many hours of looking and many miles on the car we found MAXICAT, our first sailboat.
