One of the main attraction of Drumcliffe, north of Sligo, is the town's cemetery. The grandfather of the famous writer William Butler Yeats had been the pastor at the church of Drumcliffe for many years. Therefore, this is the place where the writer found his eternal rest. |
The inscription of Yeats' tombstone, written by himself, reads
|
The High Cross on the path to the church was erected
around the year 1000. The west side depicts Adam and Eve,
Caine and Abel, Daniel in the lion's pit and Jesus Christ.
On the east side, you will find an illustration of a temple, two unidentified characters and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. |
