Donegal, the administrative headquarter of County Donegal, is located
on the northern part of Ireland's west coast, where the river Eske
meets the Atlantic ocean.
Donegal's appearance was significantly influenced by the British, who specifically planned the layout of the town in the 17th century. |
You will find Donegal Castle very close to the central
market square of Donegal. It was the residence of the kings of Tir Chonaill
O'Donnell family which was one of Ireland's monarchical clans.
In 1607, the castle was captured by British troupes. The mansion, which is currently under reconstruction, was added to the castle in 1610. |
The big square tower, originally erected in 1505 was significantly altered by adding a number of windows after the castle was taken over by Great Britain. |
