Lonely Planet Costa Rica
We used this book travelling around Costa Rica. It includes a small wildlife guide which is useful for identifying more common wildlife. However, the bird section is limited - due mainly to the vast biodiversity of Costa Rica!
Lonely Planet New York City
We're off to New York for a weekend for Mums birthday, so the LP New York book seems a good bet. The synopsis says that it proves far-reaching coverage of the sights, hotels and restaurants in New York City, this guide also features: background history; colour maps of the neighbourhoods and transportation system; and information on the museums, architecture and nightlife.
New York Rough Guide
Alternatively the Rough Guide also has good reviews, so take your pick. This guide covers New York in its multi-faceted whole, with critical accounts of neighbourhoods, sights, streets, bars, clubs, restaurants and hotels. This edition includes expanded coverage of Brooklyn, Queens and the other boroughs.
