Sapporo is the hub of Limited Express trains in Hokkaido. Trains to all major cities in Hokkaido depart from Sapporo. From Tokyo to Sapporo, you take Tohoku Shinkansen to Morioka, Limited Express 'Hatsukari' from Morioka to Aomori (see Tohoku Region Map for detail), then Rapid 'Kaikyo' from Aomori to Hakodate, and Limited Express from Hakodate to Sapporo. This journey takes about 11 hours. You change trains at Morioka, Aomori, and Hakodate. Some of 'Hatsukari' go direct from Morioka to Hakodate, so you do not have to change at Aomori in this case. From Osaka to Sapporo, the first route is to take Tokaido Shinkansen to Tokyo, then take same trains shown above, taking about 14 hours. Another route is to take Limited Express 'Hakucho' from Osaka to Aomori via Niigata, and overnight express 'Hamanasu' from Aomori to Sapporo. It takes about 20 hours. There are also direct overnight trains from Tokyo and Osaka to Sapporo. All of them convey only sleeping cars and supplement is required to Japan Rail Pass holders. |
