John William WILFORD founded John Wilford & Sons Ldt., about 1750 at Brompton near Northallerton Yorkshire. This Brompton business started making linen goods, such as ducks, drills and novelty cloths for tropical suitings. In the early days, the fabrics were woven by people in the village on their hand looms, obtaining yarn from the firm in hanks. They made their own weft, and having woven the pieces, brought them back to the warehouse in Brompton. The pieces were sent to Osmotherley for bleaching and finishing. The pieces to be bleached were boiled in soap and water, then laid out on the grass to bleach naturally. Later with machinery installed, the firm produced a small amount of tropical linen, but concentrated mainly on furnishing fabrics and uncut moquette for the furnishing trade
