There can be a time in someone's life when they get to smell the fresh, sweet sea air of the deep, blue Mediterranean waters, but not everyone's gets to. Luck for me i got to.
It was 5 years on May 31st, 1999 since i'd been to my true home, Lebanon. The first time i stepped off the plane into another world was in 1992. I was seven then. I stepped out onto the stairs of the plane, and the dark skies were lit with tall, endless spotlights that were shinning white onto the runway. Breathing in the night air made my heart beat faster. The humidity hung to my face, and when the breeze hit my cheeks, it completely changed my temperature from the cold plane to the hot, humid night air of Beirut, Lebanon's capital. The airport was exciting; well anything was exciting, especially for me in a new country. After we crossed through customs, we stepped out of the airport into the heart of Lebanon. For the first time in my life i saw palm trees!!!! I began to put silly childern's thoughts through my mind like what i would see next. I'd thought of this cartoon i'd seen on TV back in Canada, so i expected to see banana trees somewhere, as i'd seen on the cartoon. Believe it or not, i saw little banana bunches growing on tall trees over by the roadside, and on parts of the beach. I looked around at the beautiful nightly scenery. The lights were shinning out of the pitch blackness for miles. It was spectacular. When we got to my grandparents' house in the valley, my grandmother was throwing rice over the car as it pulled up to the house, and with them was the family outside celebrating our arrival. That night, i snuck outside, up on to the roof. I stayed close to the door, scared of falling off the ledges of the roof. I looked up at the stary sky, took a long deep breath. There wasn't a light for miles in the valley-completely different from Beirut. It was stunning. Never had i seen so many stars in the sky. I'd only been in Lebanon for about 3 hours, but for some reason, i knew that moment on that i was finally at home.
