Mazatlan
(The Land of the Deer)

Home

Mazatlan Mexico is on the Pacific ocean, just below the Gulf of California (they call it the sea of Cortez). Also known as "the pearl of the pacific" and supposededly has nothing to do with pearls. I did see some oyster fisherman removing pearls out of alot of oysters, and they do sell them (hand crafted) at some of the local jewerly shops. But I think that the saying means more that it's a beautiful place to visit, which it is. It has it's pitfalls like anything else, but it is a great vacation destination. Mazatlan is actually a Aztech word for "the place of the deer" Just south of the Tropic of cancer, the winter nights run around 55 - 60 degrees F, and around 85 - 90 during the day. Lots of small islands and rocks scatter the Sea of Cortez and Mazatlan has a long history of pirates hiding in them to attack ships sailing to and from California. Mazatlan is a large city, greater than 1 million population, home to many including the Pacifico brewery. Mazatlan is supposed to be the first city in North American History to be bombed by a plane. The tour guide seemed to be proud of that little tidbit of information, but I'm not sure why. But it's a rich and interesting place to explore, so -

Come with me on a mini vacation to the Land of the Deer!

This was a picture I had taken early in the morning when I had first stepped out of my hotel room. Directly below me is a court where they had the pool, and a little play area for kids.

I only had to cross the street to get to the beach. This picture was taken facing south as the sun was just starting to rise on the Pacific Ocean.

Why Mazatlan?

Why Mazatlan? Well, for me it was a cheap trip. I have a good travel agent for one. I tell her within 2 - 3 weeks of when I want to leave, (around such and such date) and give her the ideas where I would like to go. She calls me a few days later with some deals. I generally don't like bigger cities, and prefer more out of the way kinds of places but she made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Round trip airfare was $75.00, and hotel was $40.00 per night. How could I say no?

This is the place where I had learned that I not only like seafood, I love it. I rarely go eat seafood (outside of a little shrimp) at home, but I'm always ready to try anything once, twice if I like it.
