Sieraaj took this pic when I went to Robben Island for the first (and only, so far) time in April 1997. That is, of course, our most famous landmark- Table Mountain, and our city lying at the foot of the mountain. When I refer to "Town" or "Central Cape Town" I'm referring to the bit in the middle of all those mountains- you can see some of the high-rise buildings if you look closely. The City Centre is also referred to as the "City Bowl" because, well, I guess the mountains form a protective "bowl" around the city?? :)
Robben Island lies a kilometre, two kilometres or a few kilometres (?) off the coast of Cape Town (see pic below). Robben Island is where our most famous citizen, Former President Nelson Mandela, was imprisoned for most of his 27-year prison stay. Robben Island has been declared a "World Heritage Site" and there are daily organised tours from the V&A Waterfront to Robben Island, which includes a walk past President Mandela's old cell.
Below is a pic to help you get an idea of what Robben Island looks like... just a few kilometres off the coast of Cape Town. This pic was taken in September 2000, I 'borrowed' it from news24.co.za - those are Belgian F16 fighter jets.
