In September I spent a great weekend in Münster with my friend Anette Schindler. Saturday, September 29, was one of the loveliest days I've ever experienced. The weather was great. I got to see a lot of people and all sorts of happenings in an interesting city, we had a picnic, and we took out a paddleboat on the Aasee, or Aa Lake perhaps in English. In the evening, we saw the movie "Shrek," translated into German. It was a great experience, and my second time in a German movie theater. In the movie theaters I've visited here in Germany, you have reserved places on the tickets. There are also a lot of advertisements as well as previews before the show, and sometimes people come through and sell icecream right before it starts. Germany provides a different but nice movie-going experience for an American. Now here are a few pictures of Saturday in Münster.
Here are Anette and Tobias, or Tobi, in their kitchen. They also share this apartment with another student. It's got great location, right down the street from the train station.
Here's Anette at the local market, which is always full of sellers on Saturdays and Wednesdays, until 1 or 2 in the afternoon. There were so many people, and lots of fresh fruit, chesse, bread, meat, flowers, and other wares--we bought some excellent gouda, some nice brie, two small baguettes, and some plums and raspberries for a late lunch.
Here I am in the market.
And let's try another view.
Here's a shot of Münster with a Roncalli circus wagon driving through the street. Yesterday, there was music everywhere, from the circus wagon, from street musicians, and from peace and anti-racism events. Don't forget to note the bicycles in this picture!
Another street shot.
No one will understand the significance of this picture except for Judy Birkel and a few of her other old German students. ;-)
This poster explains that the weeks of September through October have been declared intercultural weeks here. People are exorted to recognize racism and to get to know people of other colors--in German, the wording is somewhat witty, but I can't translate it that way.
Here's a shot of Anette on the boat.
Here we are right after the boat ride.
That's all for this one!
