Although we'd hoped to make it
further on this first day, we camped at Waterfall
Valley Hut, about 8 kms from the trailhead. We
had a yummy dinner of pasta and veggies provided
by chef Chris, and saw a wombat and a quoll that
night (sorry no photos). This is the morning of
the second day, after our meal of oatmeal and
maple syrup, before we set out for day 2... |

Mike and Chris
headed out on a side-trek, and Mom and I took our
time to Lake Windermere, about 5 kms beyond
Waterfall Valley. Walking down into the lake was
like walking into a Salvador Dali painting...The
lake was smooth and black and surrounded by
crooked ghost colored trees. I tried to capture
it with this photo, but it doesn't do it justice! |

Using the automatic
shutter on my camera, we took this pretty picture
of Mom and me with Lake Windermere in the
background. |

Once at
Windermere Hut, just beyond the lake, Mom and I
laid down in the dirt and waited happily for Mike
and Chris to catch up with us for lunch. They
arrived tired and hungry, and we decided to
remain at Windermere for the rest of the day--in
retrospect, a bad decision, as we still had about
45 kilometers to accomplish in the next three
days. |

Still, this gave Chris and
Mike a chance to wash the mud off of their
clothes from their side-trek (they had stepped in
mud beyond their knees!). |
