Windermere to Kiora

The following morning (day 3), we were up by 6 AM and were hiking by 8...we had 18-20 kilometers to cover in order to make up for our previous day of rest at Windermere!

This day took us through beautiful green forests, their undergrowth speckled with sunlight. It was not smooth footing, but it was not uphill either--a welcome change.

We hiked though many muddy areas and were told by other hikers that it would get even muddier! Thank goodness we paid heed to the National Parks' suggestion to bring gaitors (those things tied around our lower legs).

Big Tree We stopped for lunch somewhere along the way. Then we hiked further to Pyleon Gap. En route, there was intermittent sun and rather dark clouds. I stopped to take a photo of this interesting tree, the top of which had shed it's scabby bark to reveal beautiful streaks of smooth colored wood.
A few hours later, we stopped rather suddenly to set up our tents before the dark clouds flooded us with cold and stormy rain! No warm dinner tonight--we skipped it and fell asleep to the sound of violent wind, although it surprisingly carried very little rain. We awoke with the sunrise, and were shocked at how cold it was! And this is Tasmanian Summer! We irritatingly took down our camp and headed for a warmer place for our breakfast. Camping at Pyleon Gap
