La RéunionMarketsUpdated 06.19.2005 down to other choices - islands index - Back to travels index
I strongly suggest you to visit open air markets that offer you a great variety of magnificent tropical fruits, spices and handcraft in a suggestive ambience. Vanilla is one of the most important Reunion products, and you will find it in every corner. Another important product is rum that you will find here also "arranged" with fruits and spices. Take a look at the gastronomic specialties of the road kitchen, a mixture of Indian, Chinese, French and African food, very spiced and really good: try the "samoussas". They may be stuffed with fish, chicken, shrimp or cheese and are really delicious. Try also the "nems", a Chinese specialty, and the "bonbon piment"; remember that "piment" means hot pepper. Very good also the roasted chickens you will find at every corner on Saturday and Sunday. Interesting are also the handcraft, in particular straw hats and bags. The St. Paul market is the most interesting one and takes place on the seafront every Friday and Saturday morning. The St. Louis market, also interesting, on Friday.
