White Tiger - White Bengal tiger facts & habits
About The

White Tiger

Earth's most rare and enchanting animal "The White Tiger" was captured in the year 1951 by HH Martand Singhji of Rewain the jungles of Govindgarh adjoining to Bandhavgarh Tiger Reservein the erstwhile Central Indian Kingdom of Maharajas Of Rewa now a district of Madhya Pradesh in India.

The white tiger animal is a recessive gene carrier and according to some the white fur is due to the absence of yellow pigmentation. It is definitely not a case of albinism or that it is a new species. It is scientifically the same as - Panthera tigris tigris

It was when a female Bengal tigress was shot from the hide on a tree. The female tiger was with four cubs, who too walked unto the Shikaris. The cubs were shot dead except one that escaped. The cub had white pigmentation instead of normal orange reddish which is the color of the normal tiger. The Maharaja, had the rare tiger cub located and caged at Govindgarh fort. The cub was reared in this palace.

When the white tiger called Mohun grew up a normal colored tigress called Begum was mated with him.

Mohan and the tigress Begum had three normal colored litters; two cubs first time and four cubs each later. The Maharaja soon started breeding white colored tigers. He bred Mohan with Radha a tigress who was his sibling from the second litter.

Mohan and Radha produced tiger litters thrice.
The first time they had 4 white tigers cubs - a male cub and three female cubs.
The second time was a colored tigress cub and two white male cubs.
The last time four white tiger cubs were born, two did not survive.

Mohan and Radha, who had father and sibling relationship, produced in second litter a white male cub called Niladari and a normal yellow tigress called Malini. Malini although normal colored still was carried the reccesive gene. When the brother and sister later mated they reproduced seven time. Many were white, but several died.

Mohini was mated at National Zoo in Washington, DC, USA with Sampson, her normal colored half-brother. Their first litter produced one white cub and two normal colored cubs. Only the colored male tiger, Ramana, survived. The second litter produced two cubs but all were orange colored. One died but the female tigress named Kesari survived.

Mohini tigress was paired with her Ramana. Their first born were Rawati a white female, and a colored male cub who died soon. The next they reproduced two white off springs and three normal colored yellow cubs. One white tiger Moni did survived.

Then male Ramana and tigress Kesari were mated. They produced 3 white cubs and one normal colored cub.

The white tigers of Mohan lineage carry the genes characterized not only by white fur and blue eyes, hip and back deformities and other malformations.

The Mohan line of white tigers in this country are identifiable in the same way by the characteristics dictated by their gene groups. They are shorter in length. They have shorter faces. The back is angled back and tapers towards the tail. The shoulders are scantily striped. This is true even in the standard colored tigers from the Mohan line.

The other lineage of Bengal white tiger are longer, do not have crossed eyes like the Mohun line, no deformities and have usually protruding face and darker stripes.

These tiger features are typical of Bengal Tigers seen in wilderness.

White Bengal Tiger

Fact: White Tiger is not a separate species as many people argue the phenomena is due to a recessive gene which dominates in some tigers in a period of ages. No more wild tigers having white pigmentation have been seen in the wild in Indian forests so far. There are lots of these tigers in captivity in private and public zoos all over the World.
