Thomas Skinner was an enÂgineer. He was born at St. John's, Newfoundland, on 22 May 1804, was the son of LieutenantÂ-colonel William Thomas Skinner, R.A. (d. 1829), by his second wife, Mary, daughter of Dr. Monier of the royal artillery [for the father's family see under SKINNER, WILLIAM, 1700--1780]. In 1811 Thomas was placed at school in England, and remained there until in 1818 he proceeded to Ceylon, and obtained a second lieutenancy in the Ceylon rifles. In 1820 he was employed in constructing two roads to Kandy, one by the Kaduganava Pass, the other through the Seven Kirles, and was thenceforth connected with that branch of public works. In 1825 he was appointed staff officer of the garrison of Colombo, and on 27 Nov. 1829 deputy assistant quartermaster-general of the forces in Ceylon. In 1832 he opened a road from Aripo, on the western coast of Ceylon, to Anarajaporo. In the following year the public works of the colony were transferred to the civil authorities, and Skinner accompanied the surveyor-general over the country to initiate him in his duties. Subsequently Skinner undertook a survey of the mountain zone, the result of which was embodied in a one-inch sketch-map of the Kandian provinces and in a general map of Ceylon. In 1836 he was promoted captain, and in the following year was employed to regulate the surveyor-general and civil engineers department, which had fallen into great confusion. This business occupied him until 1840 ; but as the department became again disorganized when he ceased directing it, he was appointed permanent commissioner for the roads in Ceylon in 1841. In 1847 he retired from his regiment with the rank of major, and in 1850 the civil engineer's department was incorporated with his own. In 1859 he was appointed auditor-general, but in consequence of a difference of opinion with the governor, Sir Henry Ward, as to the cost of a railway from Colombo to Kandy, he was superseded in 1861, and returned to his former post of commissioner of public works, which he continued to hold until, in 1865, he resumed the duties of auditor-general. Skinner retired to England in 1867, and was made a companion of the order of St. Michael and St. George on 15 Feb. 1869. He took up his residence at Bath, where he died at 7 Grosvenor Place on 24 July 1877. His services to Ceylon were very great in opening up the country and rendering overland transport possible. He married Georgina, daughter of Lieutenant-general George Burrell, C.B., on 19 Dec. 1838. By her he had, with other children, Monier Williams Skinner, now lieutenant-colonel, R.E. Skinner was the author of an autobiography entitled ' Fifty Years in Ceylon,' edited by his daughter Annie Skinner (London, 1891, Svo), to which his portrait is prefixed. The book contains an outline of the history of his branch of the Skinner family.

BIOGRAPHY:
Second son of John Burrell Esq. of Littlehoughton, Northumberland, England. Born at Longhoughton in Northumberland and entered the army as an ensign in the 15th Regiment in 1797. He was promoted to lieutenant in the same year and to captain in 1805. On his passage to the West Indies in 1805, the transport in which he had embarked was attacked by a large French schooner privateer, which was beaten off with great loss. He became a major in the 90th Light Infantry in 1807, was at the capture of Guadaloupe in 1810 and served during the war in Canada in 1814 and 1815. He returned to Europe in 1815 but arrived too late for the Battle of Waterloo. Having marched with his regiment to Paris, he remained there until the Army of Occupation was formed in December and then returned to England in July 1816.
In 1820 he went to the Mediterranean where he held the civil and military command of Paxo, one of the Ionian islands, for more than 5 years. He received high commendation from the Regent and civil authorities of that island. He attained the rank of colonel in 1830 and returned to England in 1832 with the 18th Royal Irish. In 1836 he was ordered with that regiment to Ceylon where he remained until 1840. In 1837 he received the local rank of major-general and acted as commandant at Colombo and also at Trincomalee. In May 1840, he went to China and commanded the troops at the first capture of Chusan. He was appointed Governor of that island and with his troops held command until February 1841 when the island was restored by the Commissioner of the Government after a treaty with Chinese authorities. Since the treaty was not ratified, hostilities resumed and Burrell commanded a brigade at the attack on the heights above Canton and destroyed the Tartar camp under the walls of the city. Burrell continued to command a brigade in China until peace was made in July 1842.
He received thanks from both Houses of Parliament for his services in China and in 1844, Her Majesty Queen Victoria graciously included him in the list of officers receiving awards for distinguished services. In 1851 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-general, and in February of 1852 was appointed Colonel of the 39th Regiment.
He first married Miss Scott, daughter of Sir John Scott, Knight of ireland, and secondly, Marianne Theresa Thomas, daughter of Reverend Dr Thomas of Clodagh, Co Carlow, Ireland. This marriage linked him to the Irish house of Lisle, while he was the lineal descendent of one of the oldest families in the north of England.

Died when her four children were quite young. They were later looked after by Jocelyn Henry C Thomas' daughter, Katherine Turton. Her daughter was a Mrs Skinner, whose husband was Major Skinner in Ceylon.

Rector of Ehayddn and of Ferns. Squire of Everton. Reverend William Bartholomew Thomas was Squire of Everton in Queens County, Ireland. He was also Rector of Clodagh, a parish across the River Barr to the east of Everton and thereby in County Carlow.
BIOGRAPHY: Educated by Mr Jessop, and entered Trinity College Dublin on 1 November 1767. BA in 1772. He was ordained at Ossory (Kilkenny) on 13 July 1783. He was curate at Cloydagh and Slaty Carlow in 1786, and Chaplain to the troops in Carlow in 1800. He became a Doctor of Divinity of TCD on 15 September 1797.
BURIAL: His funeral was held at St Mary's Carlow on 3 January 1827. He was buried in the cemetry on the Castle hill in Carlow - the old cemetery before the re-building of St Mary's in 1832.

Robert Blackall Graham was born in Agra in 1838. He was the son of Colonel Graham, Bengal Infantry. He was baptized in Agra on the 29th April 1838. He was educated at George L. Hanson's, Brighton for three years and John Brackenbury's Wimbledon from February 1855. He was accepted for the Bengal Cavalry in April 1856. He arrived in India in May 1856 for service with the 7th Bengal Cavalry.
