I had the honor of being in American Samoa in 1966. I was the medic with the Navy Sea Bees reserve unit out of Honolulu. We were there three weeks if I remember correctly. We lived in the new to be built government hospital nurses quarters which were b ilt first. We also did electrical work in the government buildings in Pago Pago. We ate in the old "Rain Maker hotel dinning room. Wonderful food. We made many friends that I cherish to this day. Believe it or not I have a neighbor who is Samoan and e are the best of friends. My wife and I would love to return to Am. Samoa when we retire. Dwight in West Virginia.

I spent a little over a year in America Samoa- your web page is quite deceiving. I found the people to very courteous but if an individual is not Samoan or in the 'right' family- you will always be treated and viewed as an 'OUTSIDER'. I also found the Sam ans-(who have never really spent any time off the island) to be very discriminatory towards any other race of people besides the Paulagi (heaven sent-huh?). I must also add that I found the people of Western Samoa to be the totally opposite- I am still cu ious as to why there is such a difference in the attitudes/disposition of the people. For example, most of my friends were from Western Samoa. They were so much more accepting of me and my ethnicity. Although, I was often mistaken for Samoan-(being Africa American/Hispanic)I couldn't help but notice the favoritism America Samoans' displayed towards Whites. If possible, I would like for someone to send me an honest reply- How did these views originate among Minorities (Samoans) and why are they so prevaile t.

I am an American "mutt". I live in the midwest of the continental U.S. Recently I finished a long journey into my geneological ancestry. There is Scottish, Irish, French, German, Swedish, English and Native American of the Cherokee Tribe. This caused me to research all but one of these cultures. The German part is small and very distant and as I have no interest in Germany I chose not to elaborate my ancestry in that area. I first visited American Samoa in 1966 and fell in love with the people, the island and the culture. I was in the Air Force and spent some 70 days there. The Governor allowed me to have my 150 cc motorcyvle so long as I did not sell it. I made many trips ll over the beautiful island. The cable car ride was breathtaking and the tour of the TV station as well. I still have the longing to return. The people were the the friendilest I have ever met anywhere. At that time the only Americans were the FAA statio ed there and maybe the Coast Guard/Navy. I am now in the FAA!. I went with the Islanders every night the Pan American 707 would arrive and depart. I think it was twice a week. Seems like everyone met that plane at 2 in the morning. I often visit my pict res and hope someday I can come back. Thanks for the website. It brought back lots of fond memories of my time in Samoa. I rememeber visiting the secluded village in the center of the island that was only accessible by jeep and my motorcycle. I met a miss onary's son that took me there. I will never foget it! It was tough going but meeting the wonderful peole was worth it. There was a waterfall that cascaded down and the refreshing water helped deal with the tropical heat. I do hope the people are as frien ly and happy as I remember. Another highlight was a Chief wanting me to marry one of his daughters. I think he said he had 26 children!! I was a blonde at the time and there were not many of us "plangies" ?? at the time. I am not sure if the spelling is correct but the meaning I think was "yellow hair" My best to a the fine people of Samoa!! John Thank you for the tour.

I have long been interested in American Samoa -- its culture, lifestyle, etc. I am also interested in teaching At the Community College.
