Peggy's Cove Lighthouse, July, 1998
The lighthouse at Peggy's Cove, a hexagonal concrete tower, was built in 1868. It is still operational today.
This lighthouse is one of the most visited and photographed lighthouses in the world. From what I saw during my visit in July, 1998, I can easily believe that. It was almost impossible to photograph the lighthouse without people, and I would estimate that at least 40-50 rolls of film were exposed during the hour or so I spent there. People are not normally a problem, but it was quite common for the visitors I saw to 'pose' in front of the lighthouse.
The lighthouse has another interesting feature - it has a built in Post Office. You can buy one of dozens of postcards and mail it from the lighthouse itself.
The lighthouse is not the only attraction here. The rocks on which the lighthouse rests make one fantastic sight. It is also fun to climb around them and view the lighthouse and village from an infinite number of angles. Watch where you walk, though, as the waves can be quite treacherous.
From Halifax, take route 333 to Peggy's Cove. The lighthouse is impossible to miss, since it is the most prominent structure in the town. While there, take in the lobster or other seafood at the nearby restaurant.
