The original Maugher Beach Lighthouse was built in 1815. The current concrete tower was constructed in 1941.
The lighthouse is on Maugher Beach on McNab's Island. It is accessible only by boat. Once on the island, you can get to the lighthouse along the beach and a deteriorating boardwalk.
The granite breakwater is another interesting feature of the island. It was placed there in 1987 to prevent the beach from becoming a separate island. There is a sign warning visitors not to climb onto the breakwater. I would heed it - some of the rocks are unstable, and the area was totally deserted when I was there.
When I visited the Island in the summer of 1998, I used the NcNab's Island Ferry from Fisherman's Cove in Dartmouth, and I'm glad I did. The operator was one of the most friendly and informative I have had the pleasure to ride with. We talked about the island and the lighthouse - he was full of ideas and recommendations. Not only that, but he was a member of the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society. He was able to give me information on other lighthouses in the area and contact information for the Society.
I spent about two hours on the island, most of it at the lighthouse. I would have liked to have a full day. The island has much to offer in history and wildlife.
