George's Island Lighthouse

George's Island Lighthouse

George's Island Lighthouse, July, 1998

The George's Island Lighthouse was built in 1876 and still operates today.

The lighthouse can be viewed from the waterfront in Halifax, or by boat, but the island itself is currently off limits.  I understand that the island will shortly become a National Historic Site, and that it and the lighthouse will then by accessible by boat.

This was the first Nova Scotia Lighthouse that I saw on our summer vacation in 1998.  We had visited the Citadel in Halifax as the first of many attractions.  From the wall of the Citadel, I could see George's Island and the lighthouse, dwarfed behind the downtown office buildings but an exciting view nevertheless.  Later when we visited the waterfront for dinner, I took the opportunity to photograph the lighthouse.
