All the
streets in Antigua, Guatemala are paved with rock. You can get around
by bus, taxi, walking, bicycle, car, and even on horseback. There are
so many things to do and see in Antigua. There are churches,
monasteries, convents, the San Carlos University, language schools,
shops, banks, restaurants, hotels, the local market place, and a lot
of tourists. At the time of this writing, the exchange rate is about
6.5 quetzales to 1 dollar.
The
Central Park in downtown Antigua is full of activity. Practically all
roads from the city lead there. It is a nice place to relax and get
some shade on a warm sunny day. You'll see local school kids
strutting about, the native people selling their goods, and tourists
taking pictures.
In los portales (the portal hallways)
surrounding the whole park, there is always much activity. Though
your negotiating skills will bring you nice savings, don't push too
much downward.
Here, Natalia and Angelita are looking at different
styles of braids (called trensas) The ladies on the left
arrange them on your hair once you select the one you like. They are
very friendly and attentive.
In the background is El Volcan De Agua (The Water
Volcano) though it is very hard to see on an overcast day. On the
left is an ancient church that has underground walkways. Around the
corner to the left and across the street is the famous Universidad
De San Carlos, I believe it was founded in 1675. There are
many paintings inside the classrooms from the past two to three
centuries.
As
mentioned above, there are many places to eat. Here Natalia and
Angelita eat at the Restaurant de Doņa Luisa. The menu varies from
sandwiches, hamburger, and other hot plates.
After
shopping at the mercado, Natalia and Angelita frolic in the
park. Their next stop is the famous ruins of Tikal in the province of
Peten.
