Tikal, Guatemala (July, 1996) Part 2

The path to temple 4You can literally spend the whole day at the Gran Plaza examining the details of the Mayan works. It all depends on your purpose. Ours was just to explore the sights. El Mundo Perdido, the Lost World, is another area of interest but we did not veer that way. Instead we headed towards temple #4 otherwise known as El Templo de la Serpiente Bicefala, or Temple of the Two Headed Serpent. The trail to the temple does not give visual views of temple #4 as you approach it because the jungle brush is pretty high as seen by this picture.

View from Temple#4 towards the Grand PlazaIf you want to climb to the top of Temple #4, you have to negotiate a special ladder on the side of the temple. But once you get there, the view is magnificent. Here you see Natalia, Angelita, Roberto Pablo and Jose with the Grand Plaza in the distant background. This picture shows how high the jungle can be where only the peaks of the surrounding temples can be seen.

Another view from temple 4

To complex PAfter viewing the scenery from Temple #4, we headed towards Complex P.

Front view of Tikal Inn

Back view of Tikal InnBack at the ranch, the Tikal Inn, the pool was a welcomed invitation. The night sky in Tikal is awesome. Because all electric power in the hotel is turned off at 10:00 PM, you can step outside and view the nebula and constellations in the skies above. If you are lucky, in the rainy season - July, you might see half the sky with constant lightning and the other half with a clear sky.
