From the notes of Lavrup Green-Tongued, submitted to Borrum Binbalik for his work "On the Bearers of Akasha"
As is obvious by now, the mysterious nature of Brutus makes him a difficult individual to find much less interview. Both the Library of Throal and I, however, do not let trivial obstacles stand in our way of properly chronicling this Age of Legends. So it was that I made my way toward Rilon, a village in northwestern Barsaive. With me at the time was Caarad Surestrider, en route to the Dragon's Neck Liferock.
The plan I had formulated was one even Garlthik One-Eye would appreciate. Along the way to Rilon, I met with a band of ruffians to whom I offered a unique proposition. I offered them a large sum of gold pieces in return for a few tasks. Although short on funds myself, Caarad Surestrider was more than happy to pay the fee after some slight cajoling. First, they must be seen in the outlying lands around Rilon. Secondly, they must disrupt the flow of work by being obnoxiously loud and boisterous. Thirdly, they must make plain their intention to enter the town at a certain time. Finally, soon after they see my own entrance, they must come to the inn and accost me. Because I wanted them to approach their assignments with properly noisome gusto, I felt it best to omit exactly why I was having them do this.
Everything went according to plan, and at the appointed hour, I found myself sitting in a bar with a number of concerned patrons discussing two topics: the band of criminals outside the town and the large, angry troll who had suddenly appeared in the inn. I approached the troll, whose gaze was fixated on the entrance. When I introduced myself, he did not break his gaze. Instead, he merely responded, "Brutus". I began my query by asking what clan he was from. Although he showed no sign of responding, I will never know for sure because soon after I spoke a certain group of ruffians stormed in and made their way toward me.
Brutus turned to me at that moment and said, "It looks like you need some help. Mind if I lend a hand?" I was quite happy that he offered since it appeared that my intrepid employees were intent on going above and beyond the call of duty. I nodded my head, and the sky raider launched into action. I felt somewhat guilty as each member of the group paled at the sight of Brutus charging toward them. I regained my composure and struck forth myself, determined on completing the interview.
Ducking the backswing of Brutus' halberd, I inquired about where he currently resided. His response was a withering blow which sent two of the band crashing through a table. A club was swung at me in poor fashion, causing me to make sure I screen my applicants next time. After maneuvering myself into a conversational stance, I posed my next question to Brutus. What, I asked, were his motivations and goals? I suppose he is a rather short-term thinker as his answer was, "To get the guy behind you...", which he did with a well-placed strike, "...and to win this fight".
Indeed, Brutus fought with great skill and concentration. In the
end, victory was ours and the floor of the inn was littered with the
moaning, writhing bodies of my former band of ruffians. I quickly
turned to Brutus and asked if I might put forth some questions
to him. Wiping some gore off his halberd, he turned to me and said
"Can't. I have stuff to do". Before I could fully state
who I was and why I wanted to interview him, Brutus was
out the door and veiled once again in his shroud of mystery.
