From the Notes of Caarad Surestrider, submitted to Borrum Binbalik for his work "On the Bearers of Akasha".
I paused and for the first time, I was at a loss for words.
"Whatsa matta? Your skin all bunched up? Gwahaha! I'm Ultros, Octopus Royalty! The Greatest Octopus in the World! Hey! Why aren't you on your knees? We're talking might here! Let's go, rock boy.
At this point, I got up to leave. No interview was worth this. However, as I got up to leave, I noticed a cloaked figure sitting across the room. Shadows had concealed him very well until this point, but I noticed him now. The large reptilian skull upon his head marked him as Midnight Blue. Although he did not move, I sensed a great displeasure from him focused at me. Not willing to test a nethermancer in his master's lab, I was forced to comply with the octopus.
"That's better. Anyways, here's my story. Before the scourge, I was a happy octopus doing my octopus thing. When I saw all these people building a town at the bottom of the river, I went to see what's up. Unfortunately, it was a kaer and they sealed it as I was looking. Gyah..."
"Anyways, I lived a good life eating their fish without their knowing. Gwahaha! When I died, I expected to go to that big Octopod in the sky but guess what? I couldn't! The kaer's magics stopped any spirits from leaving. So I was forced to sit around this place and man was it boring."
"I used to appear to people now and again just because it gave them a good fright. I never thought much about it but then after a while I noticed they had made this one room and in it was a statue made in the likeness of guess who? Me! Gwahahahahahahaha! They thought I was special because I was dead! Well, who was I to argue. So for centuries, they worshiped me and treated me with the reverence I deserve. Of course, being royalty, I demanded the finest treatment and being who I was, I got it."
"Still, they weren't the smartest people in the world. Half of them got eaten by Ubyr anyway. They called on me to protect them which I did with my mighty octopus magics!"
Ultros began flailing his tentacles in some menacing fashion at that point and when he finished, he continued his story.
"But I was getting tired of these people. And besides, horrors don't make very good neighbors. So, when Blue showed up, I was happy to go with him and here I am now! Gwahaha! Hey! What are you still doing on the floor? You look stupid. Get up! Oh and by the way, those bones and parts that led you here weren't free. I suggest you pay up before you go or Master Blue 'll just come and take it from you!"
I began to protest when once again my eyes were drawn to the
unnaturally dark corner of the room where Blue was sitting. He
had not moved at all since last I looked yet I senesed a tension
and readiness about him. In fact, I could barely make him out yet
I believe to this moment that I saw an eye look at me through the
skull. I took out my money purse and began to take out coins.
Not until I reached thirty silver did I sense approval from both
the octopus and the nethermancer. Giving the amount to the octopus,
I took my leave and hurridly returned to my chambers in Throal.
