Kimberly & Attagirl   GTLover

Friday night's winners were GTLOVER and Attagirl!! They won the tournament when they edged out runners-up Latisha and JimboLimo in the final match. This is Atta's second win . . . her first win was on January 16th, 1998, when she parded with MrHappy. She and GTLover have been teaming up for about three months now. Atta took her real name (Annetta), dropped a few letters and added girl to get her nickname. GTLover's nick came about by mistake . . . it was orginally supposed to be GRTLover but it got misspelled!! LOL!!! We mentioned that we thought he was into cars and he explained, "I'm into something, BUT IT AIN'T CARS!!! ROFL!!" Atta is from Kentucky and is a hard working housewife. She's been happily married for 30 years and has three children and four grandchildren. She's planning to stay as happily married as she is now for a LONG time!! We have a feeling she's gonna make it, too!! ;)) Atta is an outdoors person and likes to bowl and swim. Atta commented, "Well, I would like to say thanks to Pam for helping me get started in GPP....If it wasn't for her I wouldn't have the friends I have in WW today!! AND WTG PARD!!!!" (Even though Atta claimed Pammy didn't pay her for saying that, we're having a rather difficult time believing that!! LOL!) GTLover is also happily married to our own Ruffian. He's 38 years old, has four children, and is president of his own company. The company name is AME (ALL MY EFFORTS) Fence & Deck and they specialize in construction of fences and decks and interior renovations. He lives in Ontario, Canada on a 107 acre farm. GT likes to play bingo (especially when Ruffian is calling) and enjoys hockey and football. He's also been playing euchre now for 25 years! The winners' secrets for euchre success? Attagirl, "We just got the cards, but my partner carried me." GTLover, "Yeah Atta, you're getting lighter each time! LOL! Having a good pard and taking chances on calling . . . that's how we won!" Atta, "You have to take chances!" GT, "Don't wait for a pat hand, call on two and rely on your pard to help out." Atta, "And if he or she can't help, don't get upset! I know there are times I have gotten us euchred and GT never gets upset with me!" GT, "Yup, play aggressively!" Atta, "When I started playing with GT, I never did that . . . playing aggressively is something he taught me!" And GT's final words of wisdom were, "Work hard, play hard and most of all . . . have FUN!!" Congratulations you two . . . GREAT playing!!!

Ugotme

UGotMe and Baddly won the Consolation Tourney by beating out runners-up MiLady and WndStar in the final round. These two signed up as singles and were thrown together at the beginning of the tournament but they've been playing off and on in GPP for a "longggggggggggg" time! ;) UGotMe's took that nickname because, "Whenever a hand is done I can't remember what has been played...so ugotme...if they ask..lol!!" She's also known as Alwaysme . . . and she won the January 9, 1997 tourney with RJShama!! Baddly says his nick was a matter of just finding one that worked, "When I registered I tried about 25 nicks.....this one took :)" Baddly used to be known by his other nicks, Breed and Downtown. Baddly, who is from Michigan, describes himself as 46, single and cute!! He's a college English professor who likes to golf and bowl. BTW, ConnieB was there when we were completing the interviews and we think she got his address and phone number if anyone else is interested!! LOL!!! She also got his height for all you ladies . . . he's six feet even and his pard describes him as "romantic!" (We're thinking maybe Connie should be doing these interviews from now on!! LOL!!) Ugotme is 44, from Ohio, has two grandsons and loves to play euchre and surf the net. Both she and her pard also like power walking . . . on a good day she can do 3.3 miles in 45 minutes! (Sheesh, I sorta doubt I could even walk that far in a WHOLE day!! OR as Pammy said, "I personally prefer sitting and power eating, but I'm not the one being interviewed!" ROFL!!) Their winning secrets? Baddly, "Get a good pard! Try to steal a few tricks and don't let you opponents play their best hand." Ugotme, "Don't be afraid to take chances and count on your pard for one. If you get euchred . . . get back on the horse!" Baddly, "Ok, euchre is a gambling game that rewards aggressive play!" Ugotme, "If you think long...you think wrong...go with the first instinct!" Baddly, "It's FUN to play!" WTG you two, congratulations! ;)

Show me someone who's never crashed in a euchre game and I'll show you the number one grumbler when your turn comes. Fortunately, since it happens to everyone eventually, MOST people are gracious enough to be patient and good-natured at your return. Nevertheless, the ill timed boot can and always will leave a nagging doubt.

What's disquieting about the "boot" is that you disappear almost mob-style. One minute you're there and the next you disappear. Sadly... if no one notices for a few turns, you haven't made much of an impression. Quite an ego crusher.

Since lagging usually preempts a boot, the sudden surge in your bots playing should give someone a clue you aren't quite with it anymore. You'll just have to pray the host isn't on auto mode and off testing the plumbing. It's also nice to return and find your partner wasn't thrilled with the play improvement during your absence.

As play stops, all take turns in their ponderings of what happened. To your pard... many things could roll through his or her head in a very short time. For instance, let's say you were starting to "really get along"... you know.. the vibes were flowing. Then you disappear. Here comes the self-doubt. "Did I come on too strong?" "Was my playing that bad?" "Did hubby/wifey just walk into the room and see that last suggestion I typed?"

Now... to the opponents, quite a different set of thoughts blow through the old cranium. "They're down by 7 points so I just KNOW he's not coming back!" "Gee.. So you're frantically trying to get back to the game. Your mind tells you they are waiting, your gut says... I just know they are going replace me with Pecs4u!!! OR.. I bet they are typing in the lobby right now that I left to save my ladder standing. OR even worse... I wonder if anyone's noticed yet.

Meanwhile... you are doing a total reboot to avoid this repeat embarrassment and your virus detector is running through 300 megs of "stuff" you meant to weed out last weekend. The desktop appears.. you patiently wait for your Three Stooges wav to finish, since you're convinced it has something to do with messing up your server connects, then you frantically double click your server icon. %$&&@#!!! You double click again. Ever notice how inept you are at double clicking when you're in a hurry???

Waiting.. waiting... waiting... Gee that dialing doesn't sound quite right. Then three increasing louder tones faintly emanate from your tiny, hidden, internal computer speaker... followed by... "If you'd like to make a call".... #&^@$$!!!! You know the routine. Murphy's Law.

The most understood of all boots is when it happens on YOUR loner. There's nothing more miserable than losing the first lead of your loner... expect, perhaps, returning to find the host forgot to hold up for the first three plays. The least understood is crashing while hosting. One player turned to take a bite of cookie, the other glanced over at the TV for a minute, the third finally threw that well saturated tissue into the basket under the desk, and when they all glance back at their monitors they're looking at the lobby chat and the latest Clinton joke. Hey!!!!

Of course, in the minds of all the players you just dumped, they are thinking you're some GPP wannabe with a 486 system and when you return you will quickly feel the same chill as picking up your New Year's date in a Yugo.

It's best to be prepared for your inevitable badly timed crash. Some of my favorites are. "OHMYGOD" Something like a meteor with flashing red, blue and green lights just streaked across the sky here and shut off every piece of electronic equipment in the entire neighborhood!!!!!" This not only turns your slightly miffed tablemates from the original subject, it also, briefly, makes you either interesting... or a five degrees greater moron than you were when you lost the table in the first place. You can also try the Medical emergency excuse.. something about going into a Grand Mal and banging your head repeatedly off the keyboard, with your left ear inadvertently smacking just the right key combinations to do a warm boot. This isn't the best excuse to use if you WERE making headway with your partner.

It's important to remember we are just little people working within many forces greater than our comprehension... much like thinking you can do your own taxes. You have your server to contend with, your system, your phone line, your phone service, other creatures running around the house eyeing the phone, GPP's server and Mr. Bill Gates. If those fates will it, YOU ARE GOING TO CRASH. All we can do is be contrite, jovial, gracious and continuously cram GPP's mailbox to GET WITH THE 20TH CENTURY and program a decent save option into this PAID FOR software. Gee that felt good :)
