Call me a sceptic, but I think EA has a lot of work to do in FIFA '99.
From what I've read in the previews, reviews, pre-alphas betas and gammas,
we're looking at a graphics enhanced World Cup '98.
Game companies
today are finally realizing what us gamers have been saying for over 3
years : graphics just don't cut it. Take Unreal for example. Never before
have I seen such graphics, but still, I played the game for a little over
a week, and then tossed it aside - categorizing it as "shelf worthy", showing
it off only for it's 3Dfx beuity. We want gameplay. We want new features.
We want 100 different ways to play the game. I don't think FIFA'99 has
it. Read the features : Shading, better sounds, different heights and so
on. Will we notice that player A is 10 cm higher than player B after a
week of playing the game?No!
Take Rainbow
Six. One of the most buggy games ever shipped (they even forgot to include
sound files!), and still gets great reviews and has one of the most dedicated
core of fans I've ever seen. Why ? Because it's innovative. You can basically
do whatever you want in there. Shoot your friends, kill hostages. It all
depends on what YOU want to do. That's what we want in a game. Nothing
more.
So what do I want ? I want them to listen to us! I want them to go through
forums, mail, posts and whatever to make this game PERFECT. God knows how
much they've put in to graphics. And I want them to BETA test it. Not just
paying a 50 year old guy with 30 system specifications, who will load the
game up and say "It works. Give me my 50K now". I'm talking Quake II Beta
testing. The public. We know what we want. And we can tell you. For free.
I hope I'm wrong here. I hope I'll see serious injuries, fights, careers
and everything I've dreamed of. I can only hope EA has some time to do
a little changing, cuz the way things are going, we'll have another WC
'98. |
