Ryker
A businessman, above all. Sure, he has his hands in many cookie jars. Skilled with large range of blades; able to make his sword burst into flame with a murmering of lynchpins; experienced in romance with his worldly charm; a competent sailor as well as commander; with a melange of other interests and abilities. Yet, all is handled though a capitalist mind, and the means to a entrepreneur end.
Trader, merchant - proprieter, owner. These are the many and varied titles he claims as his own. They change from shadow to shadow just like the sword he wears, but even his blade has the purpose of furthering his goals; whether as a swashbuckling pirate commander or a well-paid mercenary leader, he gains the wealth - the power - to expand his properties, ownerships, and business from pole to pole. From dirty bars in Manhattan, to well-known multi-floored establishments in medieval cities, to Jazz clubs in New Orleans, to others. Using resources from years spent in aquiring things, names, and favors he facilitates his constant travels though shadow by use of the nearly instant trumps.
Evil Overlord Rule #20:
Despite its proven stress-relieving effect, I will not indulge in maniacal laughter. When so occupied, it's too easy to miss unexpected developments that a more attentive individual could adjust to accordingly.
While Ryker is far from an evil overlord, he takes that position of wary leader quite often, and is on the guard much more than his earlier decades in shadow. And well he should be, for when one chooses to deliever justice against evil types such as Mariko, more enemies can only follow suit. Ryker himself has proven to be a well-prepared and dangerous individual in his own right, as Mariko's tombstone now stands to represent. Cross not him, his friends, or especially his loved ones, unless your prepared to take the offense to completion. It's not unusual to see able-bodied men and women in his presence, and much of the time, it can be surmised that these people are skilled in their respective fields. Brian especially is well-known to be commonly around Ryker, and able to reliably deliever messages to the businessman.
Quote:
Ryker starts to move towards the half-open window within the room, a hand resting reassuringly on his swordhilt, but stops short before getting there. Turning, he starts in another direction, trying to make indecsion look purposeful. "I'll be upset for the rest of my life, over what happened with my sister. Forever." The words are stated with a lingering displeasure, dispite efforts to keep his voice, and everything else about him at his usual calm level.
Because of what Mariko does and inflicts upon Caitlin, Ryker is quite changed. For the worse, most would think. No longer is he able to be the easy going womanizer that many once knew him as. Just as he used to be a rash youth(in shadow travaller years), quick with insult and sword, it can now be said that Ryker was once a care free soul, content with running a number of bars across shadow and sailing occasionally with a skilled crew. Women were his wine, and he tasted deeply and often. Never one to let love delude him - in fact, *never* having loved outside of his sister, he believed in niether marriage or commitment. Truely, he doubted the emotion even existed, merely some name couples give a high degree of lust and affection which is usually fleeting. And not mere years are we talking that he believed this, but his entire life, all two-hundred and ninety of them, to very loose approximate date. And, just when you think time has cast your way of thinking in /stone/, and you are right while everyone else is wrong... bam. Double bam-bam, even. Apparantly, in all it's unpredictableness, Love, with a capitol L, has struck Ryker. And vice versa, with the object of his affection, who so far can be nothing short of his soul mate, he thinks. Could this be the end for our hero!? A bit early to tell, we'll see...
Crossed Swords
A multi-level establishment in the medievil shadow of Kryonia. Upon comming across an industrious and busy city called Landon in shadow, Ryker was interested. Having previously lost a simular property named Riva in the shadow of Seattle, during the destruction of the Hall of Mirrors, Ryker invested a measure of the profits he had escaped Seattle with into 'convincing' the former owner of the building into handing over the deed, without needless involvement of the local Barony. Naming it the Crossed Swords after a former mercenary company both he and his sister had been a part of in their long past youth, Ryker took advantage of the backwater shadow's resources the best he could. Hiring many men, the building was added too and arcitectured to reflect both his personal tastes and preferences, as well as the flavor of the medievil city.
Frequented by people from the Courts to even Amber on occasion, the 'bar' of the first floor provides any and all of the local drinks, as well commonly requested out of shadow preferances. Wines of shadow Earth seem a specific speciality. Many local mages from the Academy of Magic take to the Crossed Swords well for a study break. Their attendance wavers with the comming and going of violent incidents in the CS.
Raising up a floor in a specially designed elevator that takes advantage of the strong magical energies tied into the shadow, the Dojo of the second floor of the Crossed Swords stretches before you. A mainly open room, not too far before you lays a padded mat. To a nearby wall lays row upon row of weapons, all medieval in design.
Sanctuary
Shadow in which the mercenary group Gauntlet established it's base. Medieval, and currently being improved upon. The group itself is suited for large scale battles, although more useful for smaller prepared missions. It's name is known among the right people, although it's highly skilled members are not.
