- Present in all animals.
- Difficult at first to separate instinctive from emotional sensations/perceptions/impulses.
- Physical body.

- Dominant brain here = man number 1.
- Fully functional when organism is born, but can be educated.
Mechanical part
- Inner workings of body, heartbeat, breathing, repair and maintenance of organism's tissues and cells, digestion of food, peristalsis.
Emotional part
- The 5 senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell).
- Indifferent sensations (weight, temperature, size, pressure, wet/dry, hard/soft, smooth/rough).
- Pleasant/unpleasant sensations (pain/pleasure, too hot/too cold).
- `Mother love', instinctive love, animal rage, desire to kill.
Intellectual part
- Mind behind the organism, immune system.
- Cold omnidirectional awareness, evaluates potential danger to the organism (friend/foe/indifferent), and takes action to protect it.
- Often mistaken for higher centres.
- Cannot observe unless higher centres are present or approaching higher centres.
