Welcome to
Sweet Gwensation You're
probably wondering, "How in the world did this happen?
How did someone who couldn't stand Gwen Hotchkiss when she first
appeared on the screen, go from thinking she was the most irritating
character on Passions to adoring her to the point of creating a
website dedicated to her." Well, let me tell you, it has been
a long bumpy road. That's
right. When Passions first started I couldn't stand Gwen on my
screen. I felt she had THE WORST lines of anyone on the show. At
the same time, I didn't really like the fact, that the obvious
rival for her lover's affections was scribbling mustaches on her
picture and planning the downfall of their relationship. You
see, that's the first thing you need to know about me, I'm a
sucker for the underdog. And the more things began to stack
against Gwen and in Theresa's favor, she one the underdog sympathy
card with me. On top of that,
as Passions continued in it's first year, Gwen was portrayed as a
young woman who wanted real love. If she had wanted anything
less than the real thing and only wanted Ethan for his money, she
would have accepted his proposal the first time. She didn't,
and I started to really warm up to her as she sat with Ethan at a
park bench and explained why. Then,
as time progressed and Gwen began to suspect Theresa, I enjoyed
watching a woman out to protect her life and love. While Grace and
Charity remained clueless to what the other women after their
loves were up to, Gwen was on to Theresa and tried to expose her.
But at every turn, she was met with obstacles, Whitney hiding
Theresa's shrine to Ethan. Pilar covering Theresa's
life-long fixation with Ethan...etc.etc. There was no way
she could win... and indeed, she lost the only man she had ever
loved the night before her wedding. Somewhere,
around that time, Natalie Zea took over the role of Gwen
Hotchkiss, and with her came a new portrayal of Gwen. The
character, is now more vengeful and full of anger, but she has
also gained a more vulnerable side to her. You can see that
she truly loved Ethan and wants to the future she had looked
forward to spending with him. At the same time, you can here
her frustration at Ethan's lunk-headedness, and want to scream,
"Move on woman. You can do soooo much better!" On
top of that, Natalie brings a wonderful sense of comedic timing to
the character. I laughed so hard when she lashed out to
everyone at Luis and Sheridan's engagement party, "He should
be afraid of me." And how could you not enjoy her
fantasy of exposing Theresa's secret and winning Ethan back. It
was hilarious. For these
reasons and so many more, I present to you Sweet Gwensation.
