Japanese Culture and History

In the eyes of many Westerners, Japan conjurs up many images. On the one hand there's this technological giant, a land of high tech and a gadget for every need (including some you didn't know you had). But then there's this culture and history, images of samurai and geisha, Mt. Fuji and ancient temples.

The reality is surprising. You can be walking through high-rise buildings and stumble upon a shrine or temple (shrines are for Shintoism, Temples for Buddhism). You can be meandering the grounds of a mountain temple and find new cars and satelite dishes. Japan is a complex place. But after spending a little time, you'll find it all makes sense.

On the History pages you'll find a Chronology of events, as well as summaries of the major periods of Japanese history.
