Ranma Saotome (male)
This poor guy first got himself turned into a female, and then
engaged to a boy-hating, violent girl he has never met before.
We all express our deepest sympathies, though the fact that he
likes Akane kind of compensates. Ranma as a male is easily
flustered when hounded by his over-excited fiancees, but he is
generally a nice guy. He is reasonably intelligent in a roguish
fashion, and as expected has a real knack for all types of
martial arts. His real charisma comes in the fact that he has only
"half" a boy - he learns to use his female counterpart quite
well. He is just as stubborn as Akane; the two will never ever
admit their feelings for each other. Did I forget to mention he
works like catnip for the opposite sex? He doesn't have the
heart to beat off his self-proclaimed fiancees, but it usually
doesn't matter since Akane will do the bashing-up for him.
Ranma: You look cute when you smile.

Ranma Saotome (female)
Everyone loves the female Ranma; it must be the fact that "she" acts
like a boy yet is totally justified in it. Ranma female is the same
as Ranma male, though "she" can put on a cutesy facade while "her"
male counterpart can't exactly do that. The way Ranma behaves
as a female actually makes his life seem interesting; one begins
to think it would actually be quite fun to have someone like
that around (as long as it isn't yourself).
Instead of slumping into a pit of depression, his female self
becomes very practical in terms of deceiving gullible people like
Ryouga. And surprisingly, 100% of the time it works. Both male
and female Ranmas have a phobia of cats....when enough cats are
shoved into "his" face "he" will go berzerk....literally.

Akane Tendo
Akane is violent, impulsive and bad-tempered, but only towards
Ranma. The fact that she is only aggressive to the person she
likes makes life as her fiancee a bit less enjoyable than it
otherwise would have been. Akane's trademark is the "Takahashi
uppercut into geostationary orbit" punch, which she does at
least once to Ranma in each episode. But then it is almost
always Ranma's fault, she unleashes her fury only when he is
hounded by his other fiancees or when he calls her "uncute".
She is at heart a kind person (meaning she doesn't beat people
up for no reason at all), the way Ranma is a nice guy. And,
like all good Takahashi heroines, her cooking can cause terminal
stomach aches in susceptibly healthy people.

Nabiki Tendo
Cold, cruel and manipulative, Nabiki only does anything for the
sake of making big bucks. She is also a genius in her trade, her
favourite targets being Akane, Ranma and Kunou; but especially
Ranma. No one can ever match wits with Nabiki; they'll regret it
if they try by ending up losing their money and their pride.
By selling photographs of the female Ranma to Kunou, she has
actually managed to make a giant profit, though unfortunately
for Ranma her status means that she is untouchable - he can't
bash her up.

Kasumi Tendo
She is only 19 years old, but she has assumed the
position of the "housewife" in the Tendo household.
Being gentle and utterly benevolent, she does the
cooking, cleaning and mothers everybody when they
need it. Kasumi is never angry; during the rare
occasions when she is the worst she would do is to
tap you on the forehead and say "don't do it again".

Genma Saotome
Genma is Ranma's father, but there is no resemblence
between them. Fortunately Ranma took after his mother
in looks, though he doesn't have Genma's personality
either. Genma is irresponsible, cowardly and is a
cheat - Ranma finds him an embaressment sometimes.
The two has a strange love-hate relationship; though
Genma sometimes does seem to genuinely care about
Ranma, and vice versa. Genma is most attractive in
his alter-ego form; a giant panda.
Genma is the second speaker, Souun is the first speaker.
|
|
Souun Tendo
Souun is the three sisters' father, yet is not very
much different from his best friend Genma. For one thing, he bursts into tears whenever slightly emotive (to him) happens. Souun is also
the one who is very serious about Ranma marrying
Akane, and constantly tries to force them together
using whatever means he can. He never really suceeds.

|
Ryouga Hibiki
Ryouga is Ranma's highly-emotional
school friend who hates his guts;
when Ranma went to JiyusenKiyou Ryouga followed, and
fell into the pond of the Drowned Pig. As his alter
ego form he is P-chan, Akane's pet. God help him if
she ever finds out; he spends most of his time trying
to keep the fact away from her. Ryouga is labelled as
the "eternally lost boy" - he has absolutely no
sense of direction. Ryouga once challenged Ranma to a
dual in the empty lot behind his house; it took
Ryouga four days to find the place after romping all
over Japan. Then he frets about how Ranma wasn't
there when he arrived. Ah well...

Shampoo
Everybody loves Shampoo, the cute Chinese girl from
the village of Joketsuzoku (Amazons). This village is
reknown for being very feministic, warlike and hostile
to foreigners; but especially for it's marriage laws.
When a foreigner defeats an Amazon from this village, if
it is a woman she will have to be killed, whereas if it
is a man the Amazon will have to marry him. Ranma
defeated Shampoo in her female form, and so Shampoo
followed "him" to Japan to kill "him". When she finds
out Ranma was a man, she promptly tries to squeeze
Akane out of the picture. Shampoo is famous for her
ability to walk through walls (by knocking down the
wall) and is also a victim of Jusenkyo; she
fell into the pond of the Drowned Cat. In Japan she
works as a waitress in a Chinese Restuarant called
"Neko-Han-Ten".

Muusu
Muusu is also from the village of Joketsuzoku (Amazons),
and is so much in love with Shampoo he followed her to
Japan. Muusu was defeated by Shampoo when they were three-
year-olds, so by the village laws he cannot marry Shampoo.
But this guy never says die when it comes to Shampoo,
though she bashes him up everyday and works him to death in
the Neko-Han-Ten. You may sympathize with this hapless
lover if you want, but he is pretty much a loser. He is a
master of hidden weapons, but he is so short-sighted he
mistakes telegraph poles and bins for people. Muusu hates
Ranma for obvious reasons, and has fallen victim to
the pond of the Drowned Duck (yes, ducks drown there too)

Ukyou Kuonji
Ukyou is Ranma's childhood friend, though Ranma had always
thought her a boy. Genma had promised Ukyou's father he
would take Ukyou with him as Ranma's fiancee if he was
given the pancake stall Ukyou's father owns, but he went
back on his word and took off without Ukyou. Totally
humiliated, Ukyou vowed to never fall in love with a boy
and dressed as a boy, so she could one day take her revenge
on Ranma. When she does, not only is she defeated by Ranma
but she manages to fall in love with him in the same day.
So, a new addition to Ranma's list of fiancees. Ukyou owns
an Okonomiyake (Japanese style pizza) stall, and so her
fighting techniques are very much in that area too. She
fights with flour, noodles and a giant spatula.

Tatewaki Kunou
His name means "9 abilities", though the fact that he can do
absolutely nothing isn't really relevant. He makes his grand
entrances by reciting poetry and waving his wooden sword
around. As the head of the kendo club, he is not completely
hopeless to everyone, though by challenging Ranma every
morning he still hasn't improved. He hates the male Ranma
since he is in love with Akane, though he is also in love with
the female Ranma. Not knowing who she really is, he professes
his love by garlands of red roses and calling her "Osage no
onna" which means "pig-tailed girl". He behaviour is still
enough to make your skin crawl for several metres.

Kunou Kodachi
The first admirer Ranma earns, Kodachi is a veteren of
martial rhythmic gymnastics; using ribbons, clubs and hoops
as weapons. She appears and disappears in a cloud of
black rose petals and tear gas; her symbol is a black rose.
She is also the younger sister of Kunou.
Does that mean the two has something in common?!
Fortunately Kodachi is ruthless, sneaky and uses dirty
tricks, so that makes her slightly more bearable than
Kunou will ever be. Her trademark is a long, drawn-out
"OHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO" derangedlaugh.

Happosai
This is one perverted old man. He is the teacher of Souun and
Genma and consequently the founder of the Anything Goes Martial
Arts school. But being incredibly evil (and perverted), his
students hated him so much that they got him drunk one day and
trapped him in a cave. He escapes, and goes to the Tendo house
to seek his revenge. Happosai is extremely powerful; and is
especially good at throwing bombs and stealing women's underwear,
his favourite targets being Ranma and Akane.

Colon
What is it with the names of people who come from China? We have
all the necessary bathroom necessities with Shampoo, Mousse and
now Cologne. Anyway, Colon is elder of the Joketsuzoku, Shampoo's distant ancestor and possibly
her great-grandmother but she is definately a lot older. As
powerful as Happosai, the two actually know each other yet are
still rivals. Colon approves of Ranma as her great-grandchild-in-
law, and grooms his martial arts skill by practising with him
and teaching him new techniques. Ranma, on the other hand, hates her for constantly trying to force him and Shampoo together, though he has a grudging respect for her ability. She runs the NekoHanTen, using
Shampoo as the waitress and Muusu as the kitchen slave.

I would liked to have put the voices of the Japanese
voice actors on this page...but I could only find the
English voice actors. I don't have anything against
English voice actors, except I always find the Japanese
actors' voices more suited to their characters. They
just sound better. Anyway, these voices are from
The Anything Goes Sound Center.
