The Ladakh Project and Desert Development
Our goal to create an oasis in the more than 150 acre desert at Devachan is slowly being accomplished, with 50,000 trees already planted. Limited water supply has always presented our gravest problem. Our plans for a “green Mahabodhi” got a big boost in 2001 with the commencement of “The Ladakh Project.” A team of Austrian engineers in renewable energy projects came to Mahabodhi to develop a comprehensive plan for energy, water and waste management needs. Solar electricity and solar generating heating systems for the Hospital and Girls’ hostel will be online for winter 2002. The Ladakh Project team has determined that pumping water from a source near the Indus River will provide the best long term solution for our water needs. But for this we will need to secure a grant of up to US $200,000. An ambitious project for us but it will serve approximately 500 children, 100 adults, and 150 acres of thirsty desert land.
