Taiko Building
From wine barrel to Japanese drum

Anyone who has been to one of the annual fall concerts by Asian American drumming group Portland Taiko will agree that they are exhilarating experiences. But few know that the preparation for the show begins months in advance, with the annual summer re-skinning of drums and the building of new drums.

In summer 2000, I had the opportunity to help the group build a new oh-daiko (large drum), using the Japanese American technique of converting a wine barrel. Here are some images and explanations of the steps involved.
