The Dong People

Here a truck load of Dong people of several generations, which are not dressed the traditional way, which for an outsider makes it impossible to distinguish them from any other Chinese people - - -

The Dong People
Inside a Dong house in village Ping,- where we were invited for dinner.
Take note of the open fire place, which made me worry quite a lot due to the obvious fire hazard, taking into consideration, that the traditional Dong houses are huge, - made from wood, and built very close to each other.

The Dong People
- kitchen details -
Take note of the beautiful pumpkin bowl on the table.  It is used to store the rice after it has been cooked.
Such a beautiful rice bowl can last for about ten years, before it becomes necessary to make a new one.

The Dong People
- and here the gorgeous dinner is highly enjoyed at dusk on the open terrace -

Normally men and women do not eat together at the same table in the Dong community, but they are easy going and flexible people, and did not mind at all that Kit Yu joined us. Obviously they realized, that I needed her as interpreter, and also they seemed to enjoy that a real "gwei lo" truly enjoyed their company and hospitality, - so we had great fun - -
