The Juyongguan pass is a very
important gateway to the northwest of Beijing.
Just about 10 kilometers further
up the road is the famous Badaling section of the Great Wall, - which is
well known to tourists visiting Beijing.
To the southeast of the pass,
is only flat land, which offers no natural possibilities for an efficient
defense of the capital.
Therefore, - the important road at the bottom of the pass has been protected by a magnificent, fortified gate system, that can be efficiently defended by relatively few soldiers, - and to avoid that an eventual enemy will just by-pass the gate -, the mountain sides to the north and to the south of the pass, have been protected with massive walls,- studded with fortifications and watch towers.
No one will pass Juyongguan
unnoticed - - - -
