Just like everything else, Kino Makoto has two sides. To grasp my meaning correctly, we would have to look at her using two different ways. So as not to confuse anyone, let us start with the easiest way...
Kino Makoto visually projects a headstrong character; tall, buff brunettes of her likeness fairly reeked of strength and independence. In fact, the first time she appeared on screen, it was to wipe out some goon-looking men--undoubtedly older and brawny of build. It only seemed natural for a girl of her stature and reputation (word got around school campus that she was kicked out of her old school for being too violent) to be avoided by her peers. With her old school uniform and with her fiery emerald eyes which narrowed intimidatingly at the slightest provocation, she was definitely different...and one should know better than to mess with her. But traveling Usagi's path (in other words, let curiousity get the better of you), uncover something extremely surprising--like perhaps finding out that the delicious bento she was holding the day she got acquainted with Usagi was made by herself... Basically, there's a feminine side of her underneath the tough exterior, which was usually overlooked. Mako-chan, as her friends fondly call her, was aware of that fact. This is why she pursues her hobbies in cooking and keeping her apartment spic-and-span all the time, deciding that maybe these stuff would make her appear more feminine. Delving deeper into her life, let's stick our noses into her lovelife. She has had the most experience in this department among her best friends, and she's had quite a number of boyfriends even she couldn't keep track of. Unfortunately, this is where her luck runs dry. She can't even seem to forget this guy she often refers to as senpai, and she is constantly reminded of him whenever a cute guy catches her eye. She has always been deprived of love--having no parents at all (she lives alone in her apartment, fending for herself) and no current boyfriend.Makoto is actually very kind and gentle. In my observation, it all depends on how you meet her--mood and situation considered. She has a very quick temper, but she's a kindred soul. She's very perceptive; she's usually the one who senses troubled feelings and such (read Rei vs Mako). She's everyone's cool confidante. She's not the kind to pressure you on choosing decisions, but encourage and enlighten you on which one to make. Also, she's very protective. It's in her nature; be it in the battlefield when she's Sailorjupiter, and even when she's the ordinary schoolgirl Kino Makoto. It was her protective instincts raging whenever an innocent one was accused or hurt. In my view, it's what gives her courage, too--at least most of the time. What makes Mako-chan err...Mako-chan? All these and more. Her willfulness, pride, courage, determination, and perceptiveness most of all. After reading all of these, I'm surprised if you're still wondering what I find so interesting about her character.
