Mark's Sailor Moon Expanded Stories

These are my contributions to the SME shared world of which I'm proud to be a founding member. Most of these stories are already available in the Sailor Moon Expanded Fanfiction Archive but you might find a few new ones that haven't made it to the page yet.

The stories are arranged in internal chronological order rather than the order they were written.
To comment on any of these stories email mark.latus@msvu.ca I'm always interested in feedback.

The Good Old Days : 1991-2009 AD

Refugees
The one that started it all. This one introduces Calcite, Titanite, Azurite, Pyrite, Margrave and Magnesite. It was initially intended to answer a discrepency in the anime series. Namely why was Minako/Sailor Venus the last Senshi to join the battle against the Dark Kingdom when she was the first Sailor to appear and why did she go abroad when she was needed in Tokyo? But the supporting cast became characters in their own right and much of the focus shifted to what was happening behind the scenes in the Dark Kingdom.

It consists of two parts. The prologue which begins shortly after Sailor V started operating and wraps up with the destruction of the Dark Kingdom. The main story picks up six months later in the interval between the departure of Ali & Ann and the arrival of Chibi-Usa.

Probably my most popular story and the Dark Kingdom Renegade characters have become popular fan creations. Which lead to a phase of writing nothing but DKR stories set on the periphery of the Sailor Moon universe. I'm trying to do more with the original cast but I keep coming back to them.

Bad Moon Rising
The Senshi themselves don't appear in this one which is largely set in the MegaTokyo of Bubblegum Crisis. This is largely a crossover between the DKR and the Knight Sabers playing by the rules of the BGC universe. Much as I like Sailor Moon and Bubblegum Crisis there's no way to reasonably integrate them into the same world. In SM nobody gets hurt except the senshi and the villains. Innocent bystanders have incredible luck. In BGC civilians drop like flies and the villains are a lot worse. Compare all four Generals and Brian Mason then ask yourself who spread more pain and misery. But I had an idea for preserving this difference and still making a crossover work. Hence this story. Plenty of people have told me it worked and they enjoyed the story. Despite my pulling one of the oldest SM fic cliches in the book. Occurs during the 4 Uncanny Sisters run as lead villains in SMR.

Triangles Have Sharp Edges
A Bad Moon Rising sidestory
Having finally reached his limit with always being second to Calcite in Azurite's heart Pyrite vents his frustrations then walks out on the group. Heartbroken and alone he flees across MegaTokyo recalling the events that lead to the whole sorry situation.

Remembrance Day
I wrote this one after Sam Ashley pointed out that back in "Refugees" Naru ran into the false Nephrite and had no way of knowing it wasn't the real one back from the grave. I combined it with a discovery Calcite made in "Bad Moon Rising" to write this quiet little tale about remembering Nephrite. Set during SMR not long after the previous story.

Valentine's Day
Inspired by the Valentine's Day episodes of Marmalade Boy and Blue Green Years (among others) I came up with this story set in Titanite's schooldays. Which recounts the DKR's youngest member's feelings about a particular terrestrial holiday.

Cute and Continua
I wrote this one while I was hammering away on "Thy Kingdom Come". I felt I needed a break so I'd do a lighter piece for a change. Initially the concept was Cal & Azure have their own Bogus Journey style misadventure but that seemed insufficent. So I threw in a meeting with Esmeraude of the Black Moon Family as a catalyst and it grew from there. It also served to fill in a large blank spot in the DKR timeline. Along with getting Sailors Polaris and Arcturus back into the limelight.

Girls' Night Out
One thing I learned from this one was to always check my facts. The initial version had two of the Deathbusters combined into a single character. So you got Mimette with Eudial's personality and weaponary. Luckily I was able to rewrite it without too much trouble. The story itself arose from a notion about what would happen if Azurite and Margrave had to try and get along for a change. There's a cameo by Neptune & Uranus but no other senshi involvement.

Titanite's Bogus Journey
While writing the Bubblegum Crisis crossover I wondered if other anime crossovers would work and left the door open for a future story. Initially intended as a light piece it evolved a bit to include a vital link to "Thy Kingdom Come" along with a trial by fire for Titanite. But it's mainly a slapstick and action comedy type of story. Besides bringing in Cityhunter and Ranma 1/2 it also gave me the chance to try writing a non hentai Legend of the Overfiend crossover without drastically rewriting the source material. Again no senshi appear ... at least none of the original ones though SMS is occuring in the background.

Thy Kingdom Come

This one took a while to write and is my longest story to date weighing in a 1.2 Megs. I know compared to some that's not so much but it was a personal best. Originally (pre SME) this was going to be the final story in the DKR trilogy. The details are in the afterword following part 10. The darkest of the DKR stories it brings them back into contact with the Senshi during the interval between SMS and SMSS as some very unexpected visitors arrive on the second anniversary of the fall of the Dark Kingdom.

Prologue
1. Gatecrashers
2. Apocalypse Then
3. The Atrocity Exhibition
4. "... And It Is Your Duty!"
5. Princess of Darkness
6. "Lead Us Not Into Temptation"
7. How The World Was Won!

The S Files
With so much weird stuff happening in Tokyo you'd expect the authorities to step in and try to contain the damage. But they never do and the public seems unaware they're living on the razor's edge so you have to wonder are they truly ignorant of the danger they face or is somebody supressing the truth? To Detective Kasumi Nogami the question is absurb as the Sailor Senshi don't exist. At least that's what she said before she was assigned to a special investigative unit.

Breaking Point
Anyone remember Usagi's old friend Osaku Naru and her geeky boyfriend Umino Gurio? Believe it or not they stayed as a couple and eventually became Mr & Mrs Umino. Sadly not every love story ends happily ever after as readers of Frank Barr's Case of the Missing Senshi already know. For those who haven't read it there's a lot about Naru (voted Tokyo's favorite monster snack) that you don't know yet. Warning! More than a little dark.

Venus At Apogee
This originated from wondering what the adult Senshi were doing in the interval between SMS* and the creation of Crystal Tokyo in 2015 (According to the SME timeline). It kicked off a small group discussion on what everyone does after they grow up that we're mining for future stories. This one concerns a low point in Minako's life.

The Great Darkness : 2010-2015 AD

Heart of Fire
The Senshi used to wonder how the old world would end and Crystal Tokyo would be founded. In 2010 AD they found out when the evangilistic aliens known as the Acolytes of Silence arrived and began methodically freezing the world. In 2014 the Acolytes completed their goal when they overwhelmed the Senshi and froze Tokyo, the last holdout of humanity. The Acolytes paused to recover from the battle before moving on to find the next world to bring to the Silence. They thought Earth converted and no longer a problem. They were wrong. In 2015 Sailor Moon was woken up and became neo-Queen Serenity. Having changed Tokyo forever the Senshi are heading for their final battle with the Acolytes. A battle Sailor Mars wants more than anything.

The Crystal Millennium : 2015-3000 AD

Starting Over
There's a bit of a gap between the conclusion of "Thy Kingdom Come" and the DKR's appearance as detailed in Andy Comb's, Crystal Renegades so I wrote this story to bridge that divide. It is also intended to flesh out the early days of Crystal Tokyo a bit.

Best Laid Plans
It's the spring of 2017 and love is in the air. Calcite and Minako are moving towards making it official unaware that there are those who will stop at nothing to see that they don't wed.
Part 1 (of 4) - An Interrupted Proposal

My Dinner With Ferrite
About 150 years after Crystal Tokyo's founding Azurite and Ferrite get together hoping to get a few answers out of each other about things that trouble them.

Sentai Bogosity
This one needs a little explanation. Christian Gadeken, SME's most reclusive member, in one of his rare periods of activity came up with the Continuing Bogosity of Titanite series. Which has the now adult Titanite getting Queen Serenity's permission to investigate the surrounding dimensions. Allegedly for security risks but mainly for the sheer fun of exploring other anime worlds. Christian's stories are light little snippets not intended to be taken too seriously. Unfortunately I have trouble with light and short so when challenged to do a Power Rangers style installement of Bogosity this is what I came up with.

Crystal Tokyo Snapshots: Rei
The first story I wrote from a senshi's POV. On her thousandth birthday Rei looks back on her life and times.

The Babe Wore Blue
The return of Magnesite to the SME universe. Once a powerful supervillain he's now reduced to working for the lifeforce that sustains him. It was written before Frank Barr's Case of the Missing Senshi which chronologically occurs several years earlier. Fortunately thanks to the SME ML I was able to included links to the other story from Frank's previews of what would happen in his Magnesite PI adventure. This one concerns Ami hiring Magnesite in the late 30th century with the Black Moon War fast approaching. Occurs shortly after the events of "Crystal Renegades".

First Contact
Both Haruka and Azurite always assumed "Girls Night Out" was their first meeting. They're both wrong and on Azurite's return to the moon to join the Golden Millennium Project Michiru relates the true story of their first encounter to them and the Younger Senshi.

Aftermath - Very unfinished

End of an Era: 2987-3000 AD

The Kringle Sanction
Originally written on Christmas Eve as a present for the SME authors list we decided with a little revision it would work in the continuity. In the aftermath of the Black Moon War Magnesite and Naru Osaka have settled down in Casablanca to a relatively quiet life. They're about to have a Christmas they'll never forget.

Picnic In Crystal Tokyo
A story without major crises or excessive angst for a change as the new Millennium approaches and Crystal Tokyo's nobility takes a day off. Set after the war and shortly before the Golden Millennium Crew set their plans in motion.

The Golden Millennium : 3000 AD - ?

Version 2.0
This one's subtitled "The Next Generation" for reasons which should become clear very quickly. During the early days of the Golden Millennium Sailor V and Sailor Arcturus have returned to active duty ... sort of. It's 3004 AD, do you know where your children are?
1. Wasted Teens' Land
2. What Goes Around ...
3. Accidents will happen
4. True Confessions
5. Motherly Advice
6. Father Knows Best?
7. A Date That Will Live In Infamy

I'm only one of the writers in Sailor Moon Expanded and I'd recommend reading the others' works. Here's the link to the main page where you'll find all the stories I mentioned along with a lot of other great stories.
