Kunzite fastened his
mask tightly, making sure that it was clasped tight and good. “Our
sworn enemies, the sailor senshi … have the Magical Silver Crystal,” he
told the other generals.
“It must be our mission
to get back what should be ours,” Zoisite’s answer was firm and determined.
He had already three encounters with one of the senshi and beat her in
the past two games of chess. If he hadn’t had the patience, his action
would be to get the Crystal from her by force. However, ever since
he saw the tranquil blue in her eyes, he had known that her gentle spirit
would give in to his. He would have her trust and the only way was
to bargain for time.
For Nephrite in the
meantime, Zoisite’s statement had to be the most logical conclusion even
if it sounded so rash and even if he thought that Zoisite was only after
exacting revenge from their sworn enemy. He had come face to face with
the foe that had caused his bitter defeat and that was more than enough
to justify thoughts of revenge… if there were any. Because she had
rushed to him in his weakest and he failed to see the terror of the thunder
in her eyes, somehow there was no sense to it. He even failed to
see that she is his enemy though clearly her soft green eyes of lightning
told him so.
“We still can’t be
sure of that, Zoisite.” The generals were not at all surprised that
this contradiction had come from Jadeite.
“Beryl has told us
long before that the Silver Crystal has the power to give life to many
things, even resurrect our memories,” Kunzite told him. “That should
be enough.”
“Who is he?” Rei gasped.
Another masked man? But from Makoto’s description, he couldn’t
have sounded anything like ‘her’ intruder.
“I don’t know,” Makoto
answered softly. “He was a little… weak, then….”
“Weak?” Minako sighed.
It seems they are all weak. And she could’ve seen who one
of them really was if she had successfully taken off that mask.
“What could’ve brought
up that youma?” Usagi asked.
The roaring storm…
the dark clouds… and the powerful woman behind it… with her eyes so sharp
and scary… “A new enemy?” Rei suggested. A little hesitant
to have mentioned it.
“It can’t be,” Ami
answered. “Beryl, Pharaoh 90, Neherenia… Galaxia… they’re all part
of Chaos and… he has been defeated!”
The entire room had
become silent. Each one probably lacking of answers and each one
probably thinking of the mystery behind the new masked heroes or enemies
that had come.
But the same vision
that had plagued Rei seemed to deliriously return at that moment.
Something inside within said that these new men were more extraordinary
than they’ve ever realized and they could’ve been related to the horrible
dreams she sees every night. The intruder that had visited her often
included. “But none of them could’ve returned,” she whispered.
“Sailorjupiter….”
Makoto heard the low
voice call her. Luckily, there was no one on the sidewalk that could’ve
heard it. Makoto would’ve continued to walk on and pretend that she
had heard nothing. To turn back would be an outright admission of
who she really is. But there was something in that voice that she was a
little sure she recognized.
Nephrite made sure
he didn’t lose his strict and proud composure when she had turned to see
who had called. It would be safe for him to be in front of this sailor
senshi. The mask was his protection. However, she took the
risk to look back at him, and the thought that she would be at a disadvantage
knowing she had tried to help him, made him a little… uneasy.
Makoto gasped.
It was the masked man from yesterday. He is all right.
This is good. But when he took his steps to approach her, a strange
feeling came to her. A strange force of remembrance, something like
a mixture of happiness and despair. Something so innately familiar
about him….
“We shouldn’t let
anyone know of your identity,” Nephrite told her.
“Identity?”
“There is no need
to pretend. I have seen it all and I know.”
Makoto laughed.
“I don’t know what you—“
“—Maybe you can tell
me your name.”
“My name?”
“Yes,” Nephrite nodded.
“I know I cannot call you, ‘Sailorjupiter,’ can I?”
He was actually amused
at her pretense and her silence right now. She didn’t seem to be
the enemy he had faced before. In the later days, she would tell
him how important love is and how it had saved her and her bestfriends
until the last days. To most people, what she believed in might sound
incredibly sentimental. However, Nephrite didn’t know that this meeting
would actually result in further more meetings. He didn’t know that
this plot to gain from her knowledge of the Silver Crystal would lead to
sincere talks under the moonlight. And most of all, he didn’t know
that later, her sentimental philosophy would actually touch him as it had
done many, many times before.
“I know your name
isn’t a secret,” he chided, and his will impatient.
How come he knows
more her than she does? Only that force of familiarity she felt when
he approached… that was all she had. “Makoto,” she answered.
“My name is Makoto.”
The people of the
Earth must never be bonded with the people of the Moon… This is the divine
rule….
“The Prince was
right! You were using us, Queen Beryl!”
“I will soon awaken
Queen Metallia and the power will soon be ours! The Silver Millenium
is ruining Endymion!”
“The Silver Millenium
has done nothing. They deserve to be our allies!”
“Nonsense!
Were you not satisfied with the powers I gave you?”
“This power had
done nothing but hurt those close to us.”
“You are on your
own, Beryl.”
A sparkling red
glow filled her eyes and a strong wind blew her hair. The orb in
her hand radiated an enormous green light. The strong gale only indicated
that she was summoning a great power .. and that this could be the end
they feared. “Witness the power of Queen Metallia,” Beryl answered
defiantly. “And this is all you’ll need to know.”
The increasing
radiance of her orb grew--piercing sharply like needles.
“Nani?”
The beam was gone but the gloomy environment in Beryl’s old dimension had
not greeted Jadeite well. Endymion? Who is Endymion?
The power in his hand
created tiny sparks of silver. A pillar of dark energy rose in front
of him. This would be a strong youma. From his last battle,
he can recall Nephrite’s comment on his clay monsters being too weak. However,
as the pillar continued to emit a surge of silver light, he was sure that
this one would not be bound to fail.
It seemed a mundane
sunset that day. The kind of sunset that would make anyone feel sleepy
and avidly longing for the sun to sleep so they would have their dreams.
Because this is so, no one walked briskly in the streets of Tokyo.
It did seem such a slow day that Hino Rei was wishing her legs would carry
her to the Shrine in one quick second. However, because she had slept
late fortune telling last night, she lacked the strength to go on faster.
Last night, the eclipse
of the moon showed in the card she drew. Foreshadowing the card that symbolized
her intruder, it was the card that had the eclipse of the moon—that of
the sun trying to take over what is left of the silver orb’s light.
Rei, of course, could not understand fully what this all meant. When
Usagi tried to consult Michiru’s mirror of any clues to who the new friends
or enemies could be, all the mirror revealed was darkness. It didn’t
even give any hint to what Rei had been dreaming for the past nights.
Perhaps, this mystery was all her own.
Jadeite was safely
concealed among the bushes and he could see her walking towards her home.
She was sullen and pensive. What could she be thinking?
He wanted to know. But there was no other way he could approach her
calmly. He had fought all colossal feats of hesitation in his will
just to carry out today’s plan. Wasn’t she the one who had caused
his defeat? Wasn’t it under her command that the fire scorched him
beyond recognition? He had remembered it all too well. Hers
was the last face he saw.
The peaks of Hikawa
Jinja are still not visible from where Rei stood. She sighed.
It was still far away. It would have been better if she took the
bus. But when Hino Rei took a step, a force suddenly struck her.
Like a strong chill, it hit her hard that instant. She waited patiently
as to where her instincts would lead her.
There it stood.
The sight of him was truly monstrous and frightening. It let go of
its first innocent victim and the man lay unconscious on the sidewalk.
The few bystanders who were in the street ran helplessly away upon seeing
it.
“Youma….”
Rei whispered, as she scanned the monster in front of her. Its skin
seemed to be made of mud and melting like fresh lava. Its eyes looked
furiously at the place where she stood her ground. Rei had been used
to more astounding monsters before and the mean look of this one allowed
her to continue exhibiting a courageous stare back at the monster.
There was nothing else to do but to transform.
The fires that surrounded
her lifted the view of Sailormars. But this only aroused the youma’s
anger. Having decided on its next victim, it leapt out of her sight.
Its swift action led it straight behind her but she had been ready to dodge
his attack. However, its other arm had shoved at Sailormars’s blind
side and she was hit forcefully. Sailormars was astonished that the
monster was actually stronger than she thought. It continued to pounce
back at her but after successful dodges, the youma threw a ball of electricity
at her and knocked her to the ground. The weight of the electricity
and the several hits she had had been too much. She looked at the
monster’s evil eyes and it only told her of its mission to kill—and it
wanted this mission to be brisk. Its eyes let go of a huge beam that
had caused too much pain, draining her strength.
In that instant, her
vision of the powerful woman guarding the storm came to her again.
Her wavy auburn hair swayed smoothly with the wind and her arms were outstretched
as if to take over the entire wilderness she had around her. It was
clearer. She was able to stare directly at the woman’s angry eyes….
“Someone else is near…”
Sailormars told the youma. She quickly drew her ofuda
and threw it at the monster. The youma stood motionless.
“She is very strong.”
In the shadows, Jadeite
was able to smile without hesitation. He knew that in his old life,
he would cheer at even the simple blows that the senshi received.
However, here he is. Seeing for himself the last moments of the battle.
The flames started to engulf her with its gentle hands as she drew her
bow and arrow. The power of fire was so immense. The impact
so great that her slender arms were weakened from summoning such a power.
Her angry eyes were surrounded by a mist of frailty, but who could ever
deliver an attack so majestic at a time like this?
It is over.
The youma screamed
in pain as the arrow hit its core. It disintegrated into little pieces
of sand and a gentle gale took the specks of dirt after its extinction.
It is time to leave.
Jadeite told himself. But he would wait until she would move on.
It was hard to fight such a strong force that was only within him.
Her face was pale from all the blows she received and she shook a little
from where she stood.
“Yatta….” She
whispered. The street was enveloped in so much fog and the earth
was slowly rocked as if in a lullaby. Her surroundings became vague
and she felt all the dizzy motion beginning to cave in to darkness.
She breathed heavily to capture what else she had left. But there
was no strength left inside of her. At least, there was enough to
see the gray figure walking towards her.
Jadeite was actually
running towards her. When at last he had reached the distance to
see her delicate composure, he had forgotten to ask her what he was supposed
to ask, although it was best to ask such important information when the
enemy is at the weakest. He saw the bruises on her arm and those
on her cheeks. He heard her breathe deeply as she looked wearily
at him. But even as her strength seemed ready to fail, his enemy
still had her pride and tried to stand her ground.
“Y-you…” she said
weakly. She was actually relieved at seeing him again, and thankful
that it was not another enemy. And at the right time, too, because
she can no longer stand and fight. It would be okay to surrender
to a deep sleep that her strength longed.
Jadeite was quick
to catch her before her knees can hit the concrete. What else can
he say when he has done something terrible? His youma had
left a red mark on her cheek. There were bruises left on her arms
and it didn’t look very good at all, except, she seemed to glorify it,
as she lay peacefully in his arms with her eyes closed.
“So beautiful…” he
whispered, as she stroke her hair. “From the moment I saw her….”
The light flashed
in his eyes and saw an image from his memory again.
A vision of a beautiful
woman, sleeping. The garments of her long red gown touched the marble
floor on which she had slept. Tendrils of her raven hair touched
her slender shoulders. Her cheeks were wet with tears and a strange,
red light shone at her side… illuminating her stunning countenance… The
light from the fire!
The vision ended with
the sun dawning at his enemy’s face. Is she alive? Jadeite thought.
So he drew his face
near to her in such a distance that he would be able to feel her breath
on his cheek and hear her breathe slowly in her sleep. He drew near
enough that he would feel the warmth of her cheek and see the red in her
lips. She was breathing slowly and calmly, sleeping in his arms.
But at such very close distance, that knowledge wasn’t enough.
