If you find a four-leaf clover,
It will bring happiness.
But don't tell Anyone
Where its white flower blooms
Or how many leaflets from its stem extend.
The four-leafed clover.
I only want your happiness, knowing
I can never be yours to share it.
one of CLAMP's works...
people's powers are measured by "leaves" of a clover. i'm not exactly sure what these powers are but they seem to include anything, ranging from psychic powers/foresight to ability to cause mass destruction with little effort. power increases with the number of "leaves" of the clover--ie, people are divided into four groups: the one-leafed, two-leafed, three-leafed, and four-leafed clovers. a one-leaf may have a little foresight into the future concerning themselves....but a four-leaf has the power to destroy the world. the four-leaf clover has power equivalent to that of five wizards (or whoever they are, running the government). or something like that.
Suu is a four-leaf clover. she has lived all her life secluded in a building/room-thingy...among trees and mechanical birds and mechanical talking rabbits. somehow she managed to contact the outside world and she heard a girl singing. she loved the girl's song and started talking to her, via telephone, as a fan. (well, the girl heard her over the telephone. i don't think Suu had a telephone though.) the girl, Oruha, didn't understand this, since she really wasn't a famous singer yet and so nobody had heard her songs before except in a small nightclub...but she appreciated having a fan and loved Suu. Oruha had a boyfriend named Kazuhiko, who was in the military, and who was in love with her/was loved by her; and yet she was often surrounded by an aura of sadness.
one day Oruha mysteriously bid various people goodbye and while she was singing, she was shot. it turns out that she was a one-leaf clover...and had predicted the day of her death. she died after writing a song jointly with Suu. Suu, saddened by her death, created a statue of a strange girl with wings and a mournful expression, who would continually sing Oruha's last song about finding happiness.
meanwhile Oruha's boyfriend Kazuhiko used to be in the military but had long since ceased to work for the government. the wizards called him back and gave him another job, even though he was no longer in their employ. they wanted him to escort the four-leaf clover from one place to another. (of course, they don't tell him that she's the four-leaf clover, since most people don't know of her existence.) so he took Suu away from her sanctuary, without knowing that Suu was Oruha's fan. with the help of drugs and a three-leaf clover named Lan, they travel from place to place.
Suu has never really experienced anything, being kept isolated all her life. as Kazuhiko takes her to different places, and they are under attack from various weirdos who are trying to intercept Suu or cause trouble for Kazuhiko or are just plain crazy....Suu learns to care for Kazuhiko but really is unable to do much for him or their situation...and this is a very confusing series that is still going. (it may have abruptly broken off, since i think the magazine it was published in no longer exists.)
while Suu has never been able to have a "normal" life, however, she knows a lot more than the reader gives her credit for. she pretty much has the power to find out most things, even though--as she says in tank #4--"no one can know absolutely everything about another person."
i don't understand the series just yet...perhaps i will, in the future....either way, it's another CLAMP so it should be pretty good. there are a lot of blank pages with like...two words on them....and a lot of pages that are completely black, with white words on them....sort of a waste of ink and paper, but i suppose it's part of the whole artistic endeavor (i said that before.). *shrug* the color pictures in the books are pretty stunning though. BELLISSIMA! MUAH! ;)
