Ghost in the Shell is probably the most talked about title before Neon Genesis Evangelion, and is the first in this decade that has been able to get decent attention in the U.S. cinemas. Many hoped it would be the next Akira, and despite it is a very good film, it is far from being Akira.

Review for Ghost in the Shell

Review | Links

The year is 2019, and technology is being used to enhance humans and create cyborgs, but with all this there is one problem, the mind is even more vulnerable. People can now hack into a persons ghost, soul and mind, and take the information they want or even alter the memories of the victims and control them. This is why there is government security branch called Section 9, they are a group of mostly cyborgs who deal with this kind of terrorism. The newest threat is a hacker called the Puppet Master, that no one even has the faintest idea who he is. Three members of Section 9 are on his tail though, led by Major Motoko Kusanagi and is assisted by a fellow cyborg Bateau and the mostly human Togusa.

Unfortunately any one who is connected with the hacker, has an altered memory. Section 9 later picks up a cyborg that was hit by a truck after it escaped from the manufacturing line, but how it did it though is a mystery since it had no human brain cells. To give it that thought, only a possible computer generated ghost line could do it. The Major who is wondering whats the purpose of the existance of being a cyborg wants to dive in to the cyborg to discover some answer, but that plan goes bad when Section 6, involved with security in diplomacy, claims that the cyborg is theirs. They claim they used it to capture the American known as the Puppet Master, and yes it is the PM, but he claims he took this body so he could get political asylum from them. He says he is project 2501 and claims he is a living form formed by computers and needed the body to become some what human. After all this there is a break in and the cyborg is stolen, the Major is out to capture it before either section gets it so she can hopefully find the answer to her questions no matter what cost.

To this point this is one of the best animes I have seen. Now I don't particulary care for the style its drawn in, but I still have to say it does capture more realism than most animes. The action scenes are superb, the battle with the tank is one of the best I've ever seen. Also the converging of CGI and traditional animation works very well. The biggest problem is possibly how much time they spend on the major trying to find a meaning to her exitstance. The long scenes they show with her looking at society are extremely boring no matter how well they look. Also the ending isn't very satisfying, they had so much potential where they could take the ending to much higher levels. It does what I think anime was meant to do which is to use plots simply assumed to be done in live action and do it as well as live action. No this is not the next Akira, and I feel maybe I should have bought Burn Up at the time, but it won't disappoint you if you see it because of all it does have it cancels out what it doesn't have.
