Johann Sebastian Bach
(1685 -- 1750)

German born Bach was best known as an organist and composer.  He worked for various churches and royalty--such as Prince Johann Ernst of Weimar, Duke Wilheim Ernst, and Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen--to make a living.
Johann Sebastian Bach may be the most famous of the Bach family.  Over seven generations of Bachs have produced at least 53 prominent musicians.  In 1707, Bach married his second cousin, Maria Barbara Bach, who gave birth to seven children.  Bach later wrote the
Well-Tempered Clavier, the Inventions, and the Little Organ Book to teach his wife and children to play the organ.  A year after the death of Maria in 1720, Bach married Anna Magdalena Wilcken.  She bore him 13 children.
Bach had lived in cities where the music scene was not prominent.  As a result, he was not well known throughout Europe so for the next century the public neglected his music.  In the mid-1800s, German composer Felix Mendelssohn arranged and performed Bach's "St. Matthew", which started a Bach revival.
