The Native American Flute Kokopelli is a fabled Native American figure who symbolizes music, romance and fertility. Legends and pictures of this ancient little character appear in the lore of many different tribes. According to the stories, Kokopelli wandered from tribe to tribe, playing his flute and charming the young ladies. Some legends say that he carried a sack of corn on his back and spread his seeds wherever he went. In some Indian traditions, the flute is called a "love flute" or "courting flute". Long ago, a smitten young brave might have hidden in the forest in the evening and serenaded his favorite lady with the lovely songs of the wooden flute. The best flutes are carefully handmade. Although different woods are used, many crafters prefer cedar. Carvings and designs enhance the flutes. I should mention here that I can claim no Native American heritage, but I love the art and music and dance. I grew up in Colorado and I love to visit the neighboring state of New Mexico. The opportunity to experience Native American cultures is especially rich in New Mexico. Back to the flute. To me the sound is inspiring. I can shut my eyes and imagine the melody of the flute floating through the forest, or echoing from the ruins of an ancient cliff dwelling. If you are into New Age or meditation, you are probably already aware of how relaxing the music can be. When I hear it, I can sense the antiquity of it. It has a spiritual feeling. It seems to speak of an ancient time when the earth was clean and not marred by modern civilization, and of the ancient people's spiritual closeness to the earth. The pictures of Kokopelli were drawn by me. Please don't use them. (Any resemblance to anybody else's version of the character is absolutely coincidental!)
