Pungi

This instrument from India is commonly known as the snake charmer's pipe! It is also known as the magudi. It has double cane pipes. One acts as a chanter and the other has finger holes for the melody. I could find very little information about this instrument. I think that one blows it through the hole at the neck of the gourd. If anyone has more details, please let me know!

Sorry, the Web sites I had found for this elusive instrument have disappeared! I'm still searching for new ones.

"Chinese" Mouth Organ

This is a very ancient Asian instrument. The Chinese name for it is actually the sheng. It consists of varied lengths of bamboo pipes with metal reeds in them placed in a gourd bowl. The performer blows through the hollow neck of the gourd, varying the pitch and creating chords by "fingering" the pipes. Sound can be produced by breathing either in or out.

Finding appropriate music for this page was definitely a challenge! The music is "Orientale" by C'esar Cui, a Russian composer who lived at the turn of the last century. It was sequenced by Mark Knezevic and used by permission.
