WELCOME TO MY DAY..
IT IS NICE TO HAVE YOU SHARE IT WITH ME...
METAIRIE, LOUISIANA, US OF A !!,
|
Friday evening....Writing this settled well into downtown Metairie after an interesting drive past the above-ground burial grounds and lots of very old buildings indeed, combined , of course, with the sprawling, slightly run down and dusty modernity that seems to categorize airport suburbs worldwide..
And found I was missing the Professor's conversation, he who must have made the same trip, alone also, last night, but I doubted he had the company of a cabbie quite as friendly as mine, who recognized my accent straight away, and wanted to tell me all about his very pleasant memories of my hometwon port during his days as a Merchant Seaman..
So the time passed pleasantly, and he helped me with my luggage, (no Parc St Charles or Hilton, with uniformed attendants springing to, THIS time.), but the desk staff were very friendly, even though I was three hours too early to check into the room reserved for me. Instead, I opted to take one that WAS ready, a smoking room, which will not, I hope, prove a mistake. .
This is a very interesting hotel, which I think must have been quite Grand indeed when it was first built.Inside the huge foyer, everything is cylindrical, even the lifts, and internal balconies seem to stretch upward for ever, rather redolent of an inverted House Of The Rising Sun. But like everything here in New Orleans, there is this sense of slight mustiness..not actual mildew I am sure, but it just SEEMS like it, as though every building is just keeping slightly ahead of the rising damp!..
There is no missing the Landmark Hotel, high and cylindrical and bright blue, though I am in one of the less grand front rooms in a normal shaped block, and lacking the grand balconies of the tower. But I am not paying the prices such a room commands, either, and since I plan to work while I am here, and those balconies look very exposed to the industrial and flightpath air, I am probably better off right here!
It is a homely, comfortable, eighth-floor room, spacious and equipped for working, with a long desk and work chair as well as table and comfortable chairs, a moveable datapoint phone, plenty of finely-carpentered, thoughtfully designed storage, a kingsized bed and a view...The radio tunes easily into the classical station and there is a coffeemaker and supplies, and tomorrow I shall have a refrigerator. Life could be worse!.
Tonight, I am expecting John to arrive to spend all or part of the weekend,
This was not an invitation issued without some soul-searching and he has been set some rather stringent conditions...Despite his insistence that I am not staying here , I have told him I am not moving out of this hotel, and that I am not going to Texas or Tennessee to meet more of his family...but that he is welcome to come stay with me here and do some day excursions as long as he makes no further attempts to railroad me..to boss or bully or steamroller ..nor to change my carefully tuned radio station from classical to country and western, to winge and whine if I am chatting online to husband or the Professor, and not to complain if I want to work on my webpage!
He was a bit bewildered but he agreed, and I imagine he will do his best , (and make it obvious, of course) to adhere to my rules. And will manage to make me feel mean about having made them, of course, of course.
IN fact, this trip has seen me spending my time with either a man who talks to me a lot and forgets to feed me,or a man who feeds me a lot and is too busy to talk to me...
But I'll keep you posted!
And I guess he will take me out for a meal, which will be rather welcome, since the Professor was more of a talker than an eater, and a lady does NOT like to be asking, continually to be fed.
But with John, that is rarely a problem!
There HAS to be a middle ground here somewhere!
Love to everyone ,and everyone on our side!
